Forest Green Rovers have denied claims a supporter was ejected for taking a bacon sandwich into their ground.
Following a 5-0 victory over Morecambe on Saturday, confirming they will visit Boreham Wood in the National League play-offs, a video was posted on social media showing a fan being apprehended and led out of the venue by stewards.
The video carried a caption claiming the incident took place for “sneaking a bacon butty” into The New Lawn.
Forest Green, who claimed they were the first club in the world to adopt a vegan matchday menu in 2015, responded with a statement headlined ‘baconbuttygate’.
“We are aware of a video circulating online following our game against Morecambe yesterday,” the club posted on X.
“Contrary to social media opinion and wisdom, the ejection was nothing to do with bacon sarnies more a little ‘over-exuberance’ on the last day of the season. After repeated warnings, the stewards were left with no choice and the gentleman was ejected from the stadium.”
Manager Robbie Savage also rubbished the claims when asked about the viral video during his 606 show on BBC Radio 5 Live on Sunday.
“I’ve seen that, it’s gone viral today. It’s fake news,” Savage said.
“It’s fake news, there was no bacon involved. I can 100% categorically confirm there was no bacon sandwich.”
