The final Signature Event of the 2026 PGA Tour will roll into a fifth day and Sunday’s final round was hit with delays.
After half an hour of paying through the rain, thundery showers stopped the final round at 5:57pm for 90 minutes.
The severe weather caught everyone off guard. Sunday’s forecast had initially predicted a clear, 84-degree afternoon with a 10% chance of rain.
Heavy downpours quickly turned into a electrical storm, forcing PGA Tour officials to blow the horn and pull the players off the course immediately.
After the horn sounded, Scottie Scheffler returned to sink a crucial eight-foot par putt on the 18th to stay level with Victor Hovland on 21-under-par.
Officials issued a severe warning to the thousands of fans packed around the back nine, urging them to seek shelter from the incoming lightning.
However, instead of listening to the warning, large pockets of the crowd chose to brave the downpour.
Fans were captured having a splash in the puddles that had formed on the golf cart.
At 7:03pm, the Travelers Championship announced that there woud be no re-entry to the gol course for the rest of the evening, due to the impact of the rain.
Roughly 1.12 inches of rain were dropped on the course, but miraculously, the grounds crews cleared the standing water and play would resume at 7:20pm.
However, officials deemed there was not enough daylight for the playoff between Scheffler and Hovland to go ahead, and it will now take place on Monday.
Scheffler is looking for his second win of the season – and first since turning 30 – while Hovland is eyeing his first victory since last March.
Hovland had a one-shot lead going into the fourth round and was close to clinching victory on the 18th, but his birdie attempt from 25 feet narrowly missed as he signed for a one-under-par 69.
“So close to getting it done on 18, but I’ll take the play-off,” Hovland said.
“I played a lot of great golf this week, so I’m feeling pretty good. Obviously, I would have liked to have got it done in regulation, but I have a chance again to win.”
“For a while there, I wasn’t even in second place, so really happy that I still have a shot.”
“It’s nice to be able to hole those putts, keep myself in the tournament,” Scheffler said after the round.
“It’s more fun when you’re making the ones to win, but to keep yourself in it is also nice.
“Like I said, I live another day until tomorrow, and will be coming out in the morning and see what I can do.”
US Open champion Wyndham Clark carded a closing 65 to finish tied fifth on 18 under, with Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre in a share of 10th two strokes further back.
But star of the day with US Ryder Cup star Collin Morikawa who surged into contention for his second title of the season with a brilliant nine-under-par round of 61 to set the clubcase lead at -20.
But Scheffler and Hovland reeled him in and will now go head to head in extra time with $3.6m winners check on the line.
