England’s players were told to shelter in place after residents in Kansas City were issued a severe thunderstorm warning.
An alert was sent out via text message, which warned of ‘destructive’ 80mph winds, while there were also tornado sirens.
Also mentioned in the alert was the threat of flying debris, which ‘may be deadly’ for those who were caught without taking shelter.
Tornado sirens were sounded around the city to further warn residents of the imminent weather threat.
England players told to stay in their bathroom amid wild weather
Speaking on talkSPORT’s coverage of Scotland v Haiti at the World Cup, commentator Natalie Sawyer briefed listeners on how the England camp were dealing with the wild weather unfolding in Kansas City.
“Just to quickly update you more on what we’re hearing, what’s happening in Kansas, where there are tornado warnings,” Sawyer said.
“Our England correspondent, Faye Carruthers, says that they have all been recommended to stay in their rooms in a bathroom as well as sirens continue to go off.
“And even though they are trying to watch the Scotland game, they’re currently actually more on storm watch with the screen split, but it’s a mini-screen. And the weather is certainly taking precedence.”
talkSPORT’s chief live football anchor Adrian Durham, who is in Dallas, Texas, and away from the dangerous weather, added on the coverage: “There are storms forecast throughout Kansas City and Missouri, which is where England are, as you say.
“The latest update was that there’s power outages and they’re growing. There’s even more of those than they’d expected as the storms move across the region. So it’s just one to keep an eye on.
“But very active storms at the moment and hopefully everything will be all right as far as the England camp are concerned.”
Coverage interrupted
As Sawyer indicated, the weather may have had an impact on the world feed for Scotland’s World Cup opener against Haiti.
At a similar time to when the weather alert was issued, coverage on the BBC briefly dropped out and cut to a test card.
When the feed returned, BBC commentator Liam McLeod apologised for the visual problems and explained it was down to an issue with the world feed.
A text box in the upper right corner was also displayed which read: “We apologise for the loss of pictures.”
For those watching Fox’s coverage in Kansas City, they too had a brief outage.
But when the feed returned, the Scotland v Haiti match was relegated to a corner box.
In its place was the local news providing immediate updates on the weather for Kansas City residents.
England, Argentina, Algeria and the Netherlands all have their base camps either in Kansas City or in close proximity.
The timing of the weather warning is especially not ideal for the Dutch, as they get their World Cup proceedings under way on Sunday against Japan at 9pm BST.
