Darts icon Phil Taylor has revealed that he was ‘fined every week’ throughout his career and even for events he didn’t play at.
Taylor, who is considered the greatest player of all time, may have won 16 world titles, but he seemingly broke plenty of rules.
He has opened up about his regular run-ins with the PDC and DRA (Darts Regulation Authority) across his incredible playing days.
The darting legend explained on the Double Tops podcast: âI was fined every week.
âYeah, I had a standing order with the PDC â I did, with the DRA â always paying them.
âIf I sneezed, Iâd get fined for it. I got fined for tournaments and I wasnât even at the tournament.”
Taylor then went on to speak further about receiving a fine for something that he couldn’t possibly have been there for.
He admitted he had a clash with PDC chief Barry Hearn surrounding the punishment for an event he didn’t attend.
âBarry says, youâve got a ÂŁ200 or two grand fine here,” the 65-year-old said.
âYou were playing in the top end of Germany near Russia and you didnât mark the board and everything else.
“I said, âIâm not paying it, Barry.â âOh, just pay it.â
“I said, âNo, Iâm not paying it. Iâll knock it out.â I said, âNo, Iâm not paying it, Barry.â”
‘Jog on’
And Taylor revealed that the more he pushed back on the fine, Hearn would threaten him with an even bigger punishment.
On what Hearn said, he added: ââItâll go up to four grand, you know.â
“I said, âI donât care if it goes up to ÂŁ40,000 â I ainât paying it.â
âHe says, âWhy wonât you pay it?â I said, âI was never there. I wasnât at the tournament.â
âI said, âWhy would I pay you? Jog on.â Barry went, âYou werenât there, were you?â
âI said, âNo, I wasnât there.ââ
Taylor’s iconic career
Darts lost one of their greatest when Taylor retired from the professional game eight years ago in 2018.
But the retirement may have helped him save some cash, considering the amount of fines he says he was paying.
‘The Power’ called time on his career after playing for more than 30 years, holding the No.1 spot in the world for 13 of those.
He won 87 major trophies, which is a record that fans think only Luke Littler could potentially get near.
Taylor retired a 16-time world champion, sitting clear of any other player on the planet with his incredible collection.
