Daniel Dubois picked himself up off the canvas twice to stop a brave Fabio Wardley in one of the best fights ever seen in a British ring.
‘Triple D’ was down in the opening 10 seconds of the fight and again in the third stanza, but he showed immense mental resilience to rebound and stop his compatriot in the eleventh stanza.
In doing so, he snatched the WBO heavyweight title and silenced the naysayers who questioned his heart after crushing defeats to Oleksandr Usyk and Joe Joyce.
“It was a war,” said Dubois after revitalising his career by becoming a two-time heavyweight titlist.
“We came through the sticky moments. Thank you, Fabio, for that. Thank you.
“What a great fight, what a great battle, man.”
Story of the fight
It was bombs away from the opening bell, as Wardley decked Dubois with the first right hand he landed.
Dubois jumped up quickly and saw out the round before rebounding well in the second stanza.
Just as Dubois seemed to be getting into his groove, he was sent tumbling to the canvas again in the third by a looping right.
The shot landed behind Dubois’ ear and discombobulated the challenger as he stumbled backwards and down onto one knee.
It felt as though Wardley was moments away from a stoppage.
But Dubois bit down on his gumshield and came back firing.
Dubois began to establish his distance in the fifth round, darting in and out of range behind a ram-rod jab.
As Wardley loaded up, Dubois rolled underneath the right hand and came over the top with a backhand of his own.
Dubois was repeatedly snapping back the champion’s head by the midway point, with the momentum well and truly in his favour.
He outmuscled Wardley on the inside as they came in close and worked well out of the clinches.
Blood began to pour from Wardley’s busted nose, painting referee Howard Foster’s blue shirt crimson red.
With his right eye almost completely swollen shut, Wardley looked in a sorry state, but the Ipswich puncher never stopped throwing back.
In the seventh round, a huge right hand sank Wardley into the ropes.
Remarkably, he stayed on his feet and caught Dubois with a booming right uppercut as he lunged in.
There was another breathtaking back-and-forth at the end of the ninth frame when a battered and bruised Wardley buckled Dubois’ knees with a right hand.
Dubois composed himself and rolled underneath a follow-up left hook to rock Wardley badly with an overhand.
Wardley was knocked off balance by the shot, yet remained on his feet.
When he rose from his stool for the tenth, his legs weren’t underneath him, and one round later, he was stopped against the ropes.
A rematch on the cards?
Frank Warren hinted at the possibility of a rematch in the immediate aftermath, but with the beating Wardley took, he will need a very long rest before returning to the ring.
“It was amazing,” said Warren, who promotes both men.
“These two guys showed such heart, great heart.
“It was an amazing fight, absorbing, exciting and the best heavyweight fight I’ve ever put on.
“Daniel’s back, and Fabio, he’s not going anywhere either, he’ll be back. A true, brave, gutsy man. Hats off to both of them…
“There is a rematch clause in the contract.”
