Serena Williams could have returned to the court in February.
The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion registered with the International Tennis Integrity Agency in 2025 and was eligible from February 22.
She caused a social media storm when she signed up, but immediately shut down claims she was keen to return.
“Omg yall I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy,” she posted on social media.
At 44, Serena is a year younger than her sister Venus, who made her own stunning comeback in 2025 and announced she will play doubles with fellow American Hailey Baptiste at the upcoming French Open after a five-year hiatus from the event.
When Serena called time on her playing career after the 2022 US Open, she tellingly refused to use the word ‘retiring’, instead she said she was ‘evolving’ away from the court.
Is Serena Williams making her tennis comeback?
Tennis stars must sign up for extensive testing and let officials know their location and travel plans even when not in competition.
This is to ensure they are available for random testing, and there is a six-month process to becoming eligible again.
Venus returned after an 18-month hiatus from the WTA Tour in July.
She is now the oldest player to play singles at the US Open since 1981 and stated her desire to get the band back together with her younger sibling.
“I keep saying to my team: The only thing that would make this better is if she was here,” admitted Venus.
“Like, we always did everything together, so of course I miss her.
“But if she comes back, I’m sure she’ll let y’all know.”
Venus won seven singles majors and 14 Grand Slam doubles titles alongside Serena as the sisters set a shining example for young women all over the world.
The door is open for them to share the court again. Whether the younger sibling will walk through it is anybody’s guess.
Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian invests heavily in women’s sports
Serena’s husband is now hoping to do the same with all-female track meet Athlos, which will head to London for the first time in 2026.
Expanding to a two-day event, it is hoping to become the “Formula 1 of track and field”.
Alexis Ohanian — a Reddit co-founder and Serena’s other half — is the man behind Athlos.
It is also returning to New York for a third consecutive year and offers a $2.1m prize pot as well as equity for successful athletes.
American stars Sha’Carri Richardson, Gabby Thomas, Tara Woodhall-Davis, Masai Russell and Dominican sprinter Marileidy Paulino have so far been confirmed.
“I’ve long been very obsessed with this ‘F1 for track and field’ analogy. We come to expect the fastest cars in the world to tour the greatest global cities, and for people to come out and watch and celebrate this excellence,” Ohanian told BBC Sport.
“I envision Athlos to be a version of that and, as we grow this league, I’d love to add more cities and make Athlos truly global.
“Whatever we do, we’re going to do it with our athletes as partners – but our ambition is big. I don’t see any reason why Athlos can’t be a mainstay of the sporting calendar.”
Ohanian’s firm Seven Seven Six owns all of the capital but is planning to share with competitors.
“The cash compensates their participation and success, and the equity recognises what we’re building together. If we get this right, it should properly place these amazing athletes on the same level as they are every four years during the Olympics,” Ohanian added.
“This equity is a way for us to have a real partnership. These are the athletes who are the first movers, the ones who are taking a leap and helping us get this started.”
As tennis stars protest over the prize money on offer at Roland Garos, female track stars are being given a shot at generational wealth.
“We get a share in what we’re helping to build and that’s really rare in this sport,” Thomas told BBC Sport. “How can we fail as a league when we have the athletes as partners and helping to build it? We know the sport better than anyone.
“When a young girl watches me race, I want them to see a sport where women are treated with respect and with the economics that we’ve always deserved, and have something to aspire to.
“The narrative growing up was that you can’t run professional track and field, there’s nothing in it. I like that we’re rewriting that.
“We’re creating this version of the sport where young girls can have something to look forward to.”
