Chelsea’s nightmare shows no signs of stopping as Nottingham Forest eased to a 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge on Monday.
The Blues have now lost six successive Premier League games for the first time since November 1993.
And they have also now lost four consecutive home league games for just the second time in their history.
It is the first time in the Premier League that they have done so, having not lost as many matches in a row in front of their own fans since September 1978.
Though in what is a slight positive, Chelsea have avoided achieving an unwanted 121-year club first.
Chelsea were in danger of failing to score in six consecutive league defeats for the first time in their history.
Prior their defeat against the Reds, they had lost 1-0 to Newcastle, 3-0 against both Everton and Manchester City and 1-0 to Manchester United.
A 3-0 loss at Brighton last time out in the top-flight cost Liam Rosenior his job after just 106 days in charge.
And they looked to be heading to enter the history books for all the wrong reasons – only for Joao Pedro to fire in a spectacular consolation strike in the third minute of stoppage time.
Though it wasn’t as if there were too many Chelsea fans in attendance after thousands made noise with their feet by heading out the ground by the 77th minute.
Those that stayed until the end of the nine minutes added on booed in unison with the club’s European hopes hanging by a thread.
Chelsea now languish in ninth spot with three games to go, and could find themselves in tenth spot should Everton beat Manchester City on Monday night.
As for Nottinghham Forest, not in boss Vitor Pereira’s wildest dreams would he have expected his side to put on such a dominant display.
Pereira made eight changes to his starting XI ahead of Thursday’s Europa League semi-final second leg tie at Aston Villa.
And it didn’t take long for them to find themselves ahead with Taiwo Awoniyi heading home the opener in the second minute.
It was 2-0 in the 15th minute when Igor Jesus tucked home his penalty down the middle of the net after Awoniyi had his shirt pulled by Malo Gusto.
Chelsea were then awarded a penalty in first half stoppage time after debutant Jesse Derry was involved in a brutal clash of heads with Forest defender Zach Abbott – resulting in the match being halted for nine minutes as the former left the pitch on a stretcher.
Up stepped Cole Palmer, but he had his spot-kick brilliantly saved by Matz Sels.
Things got worse from the hosts after the break as Awoniyi tapped home Morgan Gibbs-White’s low cross.
And then came Chelsea’s late consolation in the closing stages, with Pedro controlling the ball on his chest, before acrobatically dispatching into the far corner.
Forest’s win has seen them go ten games unbeaten in all competitions for the first time since January 2016 – and for the first time as a Premier League side since November 1995.
But more importantly for Forest, they have increased their gap above the bottom three to six points with three games to play.
They could seal their safety next time out should they beat Newcastle and West Ham fail to win against Arsenal.
For Chelsea, things could soon be about to get worse as they head to Liverpool as they seek their first win at Anfield since March 2021, live on talkSPORT.
