Chelsea have announced Xabi Alonso as their new manager.
The Spaniard had been out of work since being sacked by Real Madrid in January.
But Alonso is back in the dugout as he becomes the sixth different permanent Chelsea manager since BlueCo took control of the club from Roman Abramovich in 2022.
Chelsea confirmed the news less than 24 hours after their FA Cup final defeat to Man City on Saturday.
On his appointment, Alonso said: “Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club.
“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.
“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.”
Alonso has signed a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso arrives at Stamford Bridge with plenty of pedigree, even if his stint at the Bernabeu didn’t quite go to plan.
In his first managerial role, Alonso led German side Bayer Leverkusen to their maiden Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal during the 23/24 campaign.
Remarkably, Alonso’s Leverkusen were one game away from going the entire season unbeaten across all competitions, only to fall short in the Europa League final to Atalanta.
Although the ex-Liverpool manager wasn’t able to replicate similar feats of silverware in the 2024/25 season, Alonso oversaw a 2nd place finish in the Bundesliga and a run to the DFB-Pokal semi-finals.
In total, Alonso left Leverkusen with an impressive record of 89 wins from his 140 games in charge.
Alonso’s impressive work in Germany made him hot property on the managerial market and it was Real who swooped for their former midfielder, naming him Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement.
Despite his tactical acumen, Alonso struggled to replicate his wonders with Leverkusen in the Spanish capital.
Real ultimately felt compelled to act after they lost to Barcelona in a fiery Spanish Super Cup.
Despite the unfortunate manner in which his tenure played out, Alonso finished with a respectable record with the Spanish giants, losing only six of his 34 games in charge.
He now has the grand challenge of restoring Chelsea back to the Premier League summit, a feat they have not achieved since the 2016/17 season under Antonio Conte.
In the following years, the Blues have never finished higher than third in the league.
And, perhaps more worryingly, silverware has proved hard to come by in the BlueCo era.
Enzo Maresca steered Chelsea to the Conference League and Club World Cup crowns last season, but there has been precious little else for Blues supporters to crow about.
Alonso has now been entrusted with the keys to the kingdom in west London as Chelsea look to click back into gear after a difficult season.
