Wigan Warriors turned on one of their best performances of the season as they beat Catalans Dragons 40-16 in Saturday’s historic Super League fixture in Paris.
The match at the Stade Jean Bouin was put on to celebrate 20 years of Catalans being in Super League, but Wigan – a week on from Challenge Cup final success over Hull KR at Wembley – were far superior.
Jai Field, Junior Nsemba, George Marsden, Jack Farrimond, Jake Wardle, Zach Eckersley and Adam Keighran all scored tries for Wigan, with 17-year-old Marsden’s effort a contender for try of the season.
Catalans scored three tries through Solomona Faataape, Zac Lipowicz and Chris Satae, but the latter also managed to get himself sin-binned on the half-hour for intentionally giving away a penalty after disagreeing with a knock-on call against him, using up the Dragons’ only captain’s challenge in doing so too.
Wigan made hay against 12 players, scoring three tries with Satae off the park for a half-time score of 30-6. From there, there was no way back for Catalans on what should have proven a day of great celebration.
Chris Satae emerged off the bench, knocked the ball on, intentionally gave away a penalty to use a captain’s challenge and was then sin-binned
“We were our own worst enemy in the first half. We got back to 12-6 and from then it was drama, letting in three tries in that 10-minute period [Satae in sin-bin].
“Wigan are a great side. They held us out and came out with momentum. That’s what we need to do.
“You won’t beat many teams playing like we did today.”
