Brooks Koepka is coming into form ahead of the 2026 US Open but has surprised some by withdrawing from the upcoming Charles Schwab Challenge.
Following his exit from LIV Golf, Koepka is still not permitted to play in the PGA Tour’s Signature Events and has instead been competing in the tier 2 tournaments since his return.
He needs to qualify for the elevated events and has been showing better form in recent weeks.
He was T11 in the Myrtle Beach Classic earlier this month and T14 at The CJ CUP Byron Nelson over the weekend.
Koepka impressed in both weeks and has showed signs that his former dominant best is slowly returning.
However, the 36-year-old has decided to take a couple of weeks off in the lead up to the US Open next month.
He was listed in the field for the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Dallas this week.
But the five-time major champion has elected to pull out.
There has not been a reason given for his withdrawal as of yet but it is likely a matter of managing his workload given his history of hip and knee issues.
Next week will see the next Signature Event held at The Memorial at Muirfield Village Golf Club, an event Koepka can’t qualify for.
That means he won’t return to action until the Canadian Open on June 11 at the earliest and may decide to hold off until the US Open which gets going at Shinnecock Hills on June 18.
Koepka’s WD at Fort Worth will also have a ripple effect on the PGA Tour.
Due to the terms of his returning player deal, any event that Koepka is part of also includes two extra players to ensure he is not taking the place of someone else.
Had Koepka remained in the 132-man field this week, the size would have been expanded to 135 but as it is, two players will be left disappointed.
The current top ranked alternates are Lanto Griffin and Webb Simpson.
Koepka finished T55 at the PGA Championship at Aronimink in this year’s second major but did perform well until a poor finish on Sunday.
His driving and iron play has been impressive since returning to the PGA Tour but his putting has so far let him down.
There have been signs that that aspect of his game is improving too and he shot an opening round 63 at The CJ CUP.
If Koepka can fine-tune is full game, he will no doubt look to contend at the US Open.
The major-specicalist won the US Open the last time it was held at Shinnecock, beating Tommy Fleetwood by one stroke in 2018.
He also claimed glory the year prior, dominating at Erin Hills for his maiden major title.
Koepka’s former Ryder Cup team-mate Wyndham Clark secured victory at The CJ Cup on Sunday.
The 2023 US Open champion shot an incredible final day 60 to hold off Si Woo Kim and Scottie Scheffler to claim his third PGA Tour title.
