Michael Oliver issued a swift apology after he accidentally collided with Dani Olmo – leading to a brief halt in play.
The Premier League referee got in the way of the Spain star when he was on the attack in the World Cup quarter-final against Belgium.
Fabian Ruiz put Spain ahead after 30 minutes, and Olmo attempted to help his side add a swift second.
However, he ran straight into Oliver and fell to the floor as the attack broke down.
Fans inside the SoFi Stadium immediately jeered, with Oliver raising his hands to apologise for what had happened.
Taking the Mich
Speaking of the incident on talkSPORT commentary, Nigel Adderley said: “Fabian Ruiz plays it back to Dani Olmo, and he’s been body checked by Michael Oliver.
“Well that’s got to be a yellow card!”
Through laughter, ex-West Ham striker Dean Ashton stated: “Luckily Dani Olmo can see the funny side.”
He then suggested that the incident led to a minor injury for the Barcelona midfielder, as he remarked: “But I think he’s got a little bit of blood in his mouth, Dani Olmo.
“I think he might have just cut his lip there on the shoulder of Michael Oliver, who puts his hands up to everybody in the stadium.”
Adderley then added: “Well he’s got so much technology around his face Michael Oliver, that there are one or two sharp edges there.”
Ashton continued: “Luckily Olmo Does find it funny, it was one of those like you do when you walk down the street and you both go the same way.
“Michael Oliver tried to move out of the way and Olmo went the same way.”
Belgium found an equaliser soon after the incident through Charles De Ketelaere, with the teams going into half-time level at 1-1.
The winner of this match will reach the semi-finals and face France, who were 2-0 winners over Morocco on Thursday night.
Belgium were dealt two blows ahead of kick-off, with Zeno Debast seemingly being blocked from playing by his club Sporting.
Debast has been dealing with a leg injury and Sporting do not think he is fit to play, but Belgium said this differs from their information.
Their captain Youri Tielemans also appeared to suffer a hamstring injury during the warm-up, and was replaced by Hans Vanaken.
