Former NBA player and beloved broadcaster Stacey King has passed away at the age of 59.
The Chicago Bulls announced the devastating news of his passing on Sunday.
“Stacey King was a cherished member of the Bulls family and one of the truly unique personalities in our organization’s history,” Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf wrote in a statement.
“His connection to Chicago, the Bulls and our fans spanned more than three decades – first as a player and later as the unmistakable voice that helped bring Bulls basketball into the homes of generations of fans.
“We will miss him deeply and remember the joy, energy, humor, candor, and passion he brought to our organization, our broadcasts, and our fans every day.
“Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”
Bulls CEO and President Michael Reinsdorf also posted a statement which read, “Stacey loved being a Bull. You could feel it in everything he did — the way he played, the way he called games, and the way he connected with our fans.
“He had a unique gift for bringing people together and making every game feel personal. Whether it was through a broadcast, a conversation, or a photo with a fan, Stacey made people feel seen and valued.
“We were fortunate to know him not only as a player and a broadcaster, but as a friend. Stacey genuinely cared about people, and he made our organization better.
“We will miss him dearly, and his impact, memory and legacy will remain a part of the Chicago Bulls forever.”
According to ESPN 1000 columnist and radio personality David Kaplan, his passing came about as a result of a fall suffered at his home, although no official cause of death has yet been given.
“Absolutely devastated to hear that Stacey King has passed away at the age of 59 after a fall at his home. He made watching the Bulls, no matter good season or bad so much fun. God bless you, my friend. RIP. 😢💔,” he posted to X.
NBA statement
An official statement has been made by the NBA on the passing of King, following the sad news on Sunday.
They wrote: “The NBA family mourns the passing of Stacey King, a three-time NBA champion and longtime Chicago Bulls television analyst.
“Stacey made his mark on the game as a player, coach and commentator.
“For more than 20 years on Bulls broadcasts, his passion, knowledge and unmistakable energy resonated with generations of fans.
“We extend our deepest condolences to Stacey’s family and friends and the Bulls organization.”
King was drafted by the Bulls out of Oklahoma with the sixth overall pick in the 1989 NBA Draft.
The 6-foot-11 left-handed power forward/center played all 82 games of his rookie season, averaging 8.9 points and 4.7 rebounds off the bench.
He was part of the start of the Bulls dynasty in the 1990s that was spearheaded by Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, in which he won three NBA championships between 1991-1993.
After five seasons in Chicago, King moved around the league and had brief stints with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat, Dallas Mavericks and Boston Celtics before retiring after eight seasons in 1997 at age 30.
Shortly after his playing career came to an end, King went into coaching, where he led the Rockford Lightning to the CBA championship game in 2001-02.
But he later returned to the Bulls organization, only this time as a broadcaster, and served as the team’s lead color analyst from 2008 until his passing.
The voice behind many of the Bulls’ memorable calls, King can also be credited for some of Chicago’s players – past and present – very best nicknames, such as Derrick Rose’s ‘Windy City Assassin’, Carlos Boozer’s ‘The Booze Cruise’, and Matas Buzelis’s ‘Lil Buzi Vert.’
