Angel Reese’s homecourt debut for the Atlanta Dream quickly turned into a nightmare.
The center went 2-0 on the road to begin her post-trade life in The A, but faced a brutal matchup against MVP A’ja Wilson’s Las Vegas Aces Sunday.
“She’s a great player, she’s the MVP for a reason but I know I’m a great player too,” Reese said before tip-off.
Atlanta Dream head coach Karl Smesko went even further.
“She’s working on different aspects in her game just because she wants to be the best,” he told USA Today’s Meghan L. Hall. “I’ve already seen development so far, and I think if she keeps working, that she is that she’s gonna be somebody that people are talking about for MVP sometime very soon.”
Reese landed the first blow as he sent Wilson flying with a pump fake beyond the arc before serving up two on a platter for Madina Okot.
It was a pretty move against a dominant player who shared the WNBA’s Defensive Player of the Year award in 2025.
“A’ja Wilson what are you doing bro? This like jumping for a Ben Simmons shot fake,” said one fan on X.
“This should remove A’ja Wilson from DPOY conversations. Angel Reese pump fake?,” joked a second.
Unfortunately, that was the highlight of the game for Reese, who got a massive roar when announced to the Atlanta crowd.
She committed six turnovers in the first half alone (eight total) and finished with nine points off 1-of-8 shooting from the floor.
More concerning for the former LSU Tiger was the fact that she was left on the bench when her team tried to mount a late comeback in the fourth quarter.
At one point Vegas led by 19, but the Dream managed to get within a point at the buzzer to almost snatch victory.
Holding a one-point lead with just 3.6 seconds remaining, Chelsea Gray made a fadeaway jumper in the lane to break Atlanta hearts.
Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd up next for Angel Reese’s Dream
Reese was  -13 in 29 minutes of action, but had two strong games to open her Dream career and will look to bounce back against the Dallas Wings Friday.
Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd are on a Wings roster that has begun the season 1-2.
Allisha Gray had a game high 25 points for Atlanta but Wilson, Gray and Chennedy Carter all put up 20-plus for Las Vegas.
“The crowd was into it and we are a little disappointed we didn’t send the fans home happy.”
Wilson passed her coach Becky Hammon for 19th most points scored in WNBA history as she continues to write herself into the record books.
