Jason Cundy may be talkSPORT’s lead jester, but Scotland skipper Andy Robertson had the last laugh.
Cundy, who has quickly established himself as the station’s chief wind-up merchant thanks to his antics towards Jamie O’Hara, was at it again on Saturday.
With hours to go until Scotland’s World Cup opener against Haiti, Cundy donned the shirt of the Tartan Army’s rivals.
However, speaking on the GameDay Phone In, Cundy insisted it was pure luck he ended up with Haiti’s kit.
“There’s a bag outside of all the shirts in the World Cup,” Cundy said.
“What I decided to do is every day I come in, I close my eyes and pull out a shirt. It could have been an Argentina shirt, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, it could have been Scotland. I had no idea.
“It had to be the Haiti shirt. How unlucky am I? No, seriously, how unlucky is that?”
Even if Cundy unintentionally picked out the Haiti kit, he backed the wrong horse.
John McGinn’s deflected strike helped Scotland record a 1-0 win over Haiti, marking their first World Cup win in 36 years.
Robbo’s reaction to Cundy’s latest act
Given Robertson had the small matter of a World Cup match to worry about, he was blissfully unaware of Cundy’s antics.
But when told about his gesture by talkSPORT’s Scotland correspondent Shebahn Aherne, Robertson had a short response.
“No, I’m not surprised,” Robertson told talkSPORT.
Another thing Robertson wasn’t surprised about was Haiti’s quality.
Given Haiti are ranked 84th in the world, some Scottish fans may have thought three points would be a foregone conclusion.
But Robertson and his teammates knew exactly what they were in for.
When asked by Aherne if Scotland underestimated their rivals, Robertson replied: “I think the fans definitely did.
“We never [did] because we’ve been watching them for the last two or three weeks and we’ve seen the quality they can bring, we can see how difficult they can be and I think they showed that.
“But I also think we defended really well… I can’t really remember them having a clear cut chance.
“We defended the box really well, we defended the edge of the box really well. I’m really proud of that.”
Goalkeeper Angus Gunn echoed a similar sentiment regarding Haiti’s quality, adding: “I think you can see in a lot of the games already, every team’s going to be tough to beat.
“Lower-ranked teams, getting draws and picking up points. So it was never going to be easy.
“And they’ve had a good few warm-ups before this. And they were very confident going into today. You can see that they were pressing high. They were playing balls forward to the front too, which caused us a bit of problems.
“But at the end of the day, we battled through that.”
Scotland will look to maintain their unbeaten run when they take on Morocco on Friday at 11pm BST.
