Tottenham fans have been told that Spurs’ failure to sign Desire Doue shouldn’t be used as a stick to beat the club with.
That is the opinion of European football expert Andy Brassell, who admitted he has every sympathy for the deal not getting done.
The 20-year-old has become one of the best young attackers on the continent since joining Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2024.
The Frenchman helped PSG win their maiden Champions League title in his first season at the club, and was player of the match in the final.
With his strike in the quarter-final first-leg win over Liverpool, Doue became the sixth player to score 10+ Champions League goals before turning 21 after Erling Haaland (20), Kylian Mbappe (19), Karim Benzema (12), Jude Bellingham (10) and Lamine Yamal (10).
However, it all could have been so different for PSG’s No.14, who visited Tottenham’s training ground in Enfield before leaving Rennes.
“Tottenham were interested,” Brassell exclusively told talkSPORT.com. “There’s no doubt about that. He was apparently quite interested in what Ange Postecoglou had to say.
“For a player with his kind of natural ability, I can understand how he and Postecoglou would click totally.
“The problem was both Bayern and PSG being interested. I don’t know if that was insurmountable from the player’s perspective.
“But I think it was probably insurmountable from Rennes’ perspective because they were looking to sell high as they always do.”
Doue was among the jewels of the Rennes academy that saw the club sell fellow winger Jeremy Doku to Manchester City for £52m in 2023.
That record sale has since been surpassed by Liverpool’s £55m deal, plus £5m in add-ons, for defender Jeremy Jacquet earlier this year.
It’s easy to slate Spurs for Doue failure
Brassell continued: “We’ve seen Rennes do it before with Doku and any number of players, of course, from a very prolific youth academy.
“But when Bayern and PSG came and got involved, they pushed the price up. I think that pushed it past where Spurs were not willing to go.
“And I think this is the difficulty for clubs like Spurs at the moment.”
Doue was labelled ‘Neymar reincarnated’ by current Tottenham player Djed Spence during the latter’s loan at Rennes in 2023.
A summer later, the six-cap France international had followed in the Brazilian’s footsteps by sealing a £43.5m switch to the Paris capital.
“Retrospectively, it’s easy to slate Spurs for not going the extra mile and making that signing happen,” Brassell argued to talkSPORT.
“But it’s the sort of risk that a Bayern [Munich] or PSG can take.
“It’s more difficult for Spurs if we’re talking about that sort of money before we even get to the wages, that sort of money in terms of transfer fee. It’s a fair old chunk of your budget.
“But it’s an easier deal to do if you’re gradually evolving your team and you can drop this guy in and get him to develop over a period of time.
“Look, PSG have gone for a slightly different profile of player in the transfer market over the last couple of summers. You look at a couple of the big signings, being Doue and Bradley Barcola.
“A couple of players who I don’t think even people who saw them regularly and really liked them, like me, thought they were first 11 ready for PSG. And under the coaching of Luis Enrique, they became that very quickly.
“Much as in a similar way, say, Jeremy Doku, who did at Manchester City. So, if he hadn’t succeeded straight away, it wouldn’t have completely torpedoed their season.”
Very harsh to use Doue transfer as a stick to beat Spurs
Brassell then pointed to Xavi Simons, who was much more established at senior level prior to his £52m move from RB Leipzig.
Yet the Dutchman, who is three years older than Doue, has managed just two Premier League goals in 27 appearances this season.
“If Spurs sign a player for a substantial amount of money, for like 50, 55, 60 million euros, and they need him to be good straight away.
“That’s not necessarily an imperative of buying a PSG. You’ve got time to develop. You’ve got time to be coached, to be moulded into the ways and the expectations of the team.
“Of course, both of those teams have longstanding coaches as well, who have some of the greatest job security in European football, which probably helps too.
“But, if it had taken a bit more of a while for him to get to the place where he wanted to get, it wouldn’t have been something that would have negatively affected PSG too much.
“The fact that Doue had such an unbelievable first season was an absolute bonus for them.
“Even, as I said, his biggest supporters wouldn’t have imagined when he signed for PSG that he was going to go on to become a regular in the first 11 within six months and be the player who would win them the Champions League final.
“So, kudos to Spurs for getting themselves in the discussions in the first place.
“But it was kind of taken out of their hands, and I have every sympathy for them not getting it over the line.
“I think it’s very, very harsh to use it as a stick to beat the club.”
