Salahdine Parnasse has dominated the European MMA scene for years, and now he’s ready to take it to the world stage.
The 28-year-old from Aubervilliers, France, heads to America for the first time in his professional career to fight on the Ronda Rousey vs Gina Carano card, live on Netflix, next month.
Barring the main eventers and stars like Francis Ngannou and Nate Diaz, the Frenchman is one of the standout names on the May 16 show at California’s Intuit Dome.
His addition to the event, promoted by Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian’s Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), legitimised Netflix’s introduction to MMA in the eyes of many fans.
Some had previously raised concerns that the big names on the card were ‘not at the prime’ of their respective careers, but, thanks to Parnasse and fellow young talents like Muhammad Mokaev, that’s no longer the narrative.
Parnasse now finds himself in a perfect position to steal the show in what will no doubt be his most-watched fight of all time.
Like Anthony Joshua, who fought Jake Paul in December to increase his visibility in the US market (as well as the £70million+ purse), Parnasse is doing the same.
Franc-ly dominant
“I dominated in Europe for nine years,” Parnasse told talkSPORT.com through a translator ahead of his fight against American Kenny Cross on the Rousey-Carano Netflix card.
“I would also love to be able to dominate in the States.
“I want to show [the fans] a little bit of a different fighting style that I want to bring into the game.”
Having started training in mixed martial arts at just 11 years old, Parnasse quickly realised his dream to become a fighter.
He found his home at the Atch Academy in Aubervilliers, named after his manager and mentor Stephane Chaufourier.
Chaufourier was a key figure in the rise of MMA in France, which was only recognised as a sport in the country in January 2020.
“I was walking around my neighbourhood and saw an MMA sign, so I went to get registered and started training,” Parnasse added, recalling his early years.
“I was getting wins from a very young age and worked hard to make my way [in the sport].
“I wanted to get out of the normal upbringing from the town I grew up in.
“Of course, family is a big deal for me. I want to grow and help my family, but also be somebody very successful in life and in the sport I’ve chosen for my profession.”
Parnasse: I appreciate Mbappe tag, but I’m my own man
Fast forward to June 2015 and Parnasse made his professional MMA debut as a 17-year-old at French promotion 100% Fight, owned by Chaufourier.
In just three years, Parnasse was 10-0 at the age of 19 as a pro ahead of his third KSW bout and already being described as ‘the Kylian Mbappe of French MMA’ by France’s major daily sports newspaper L’Equipe.
French superstar Mbappe had just signed a permanent deal with Paris Saint-Germain at a similar time in 2018 for a fee in the region of €180m (£165.7m), scoring in the World Cup final against Croatia just weeks later.
“I’m very flattered by the Kylian Mbappe tag,” Parnasse said.
“Because Mbappe performs in his sport. I’m Salahdine Parnasse, who performs in his sport.
“But, of course, I want people to know my name, know who Salahdine Parnasse is.
“I want to leave a mark on people’s minds by winning fights and by being a good fighter.
“So when they talk about me, they’re talking about the MMA fighter doing amazing things, just as Kylian Mbappe does in football.”
Parnasse has held gold at featherweight and lightweight under the KSW banner, making him the youngest fighter to hold two titles simultaneously in the promotion’s history.
While he unsuccessfully challenged for the KSW welterweight title in December 2023, the Frenchman defended his lightweight strap with a second-round KO in his most recent outing in January this year.
Parnasse has always been on the UFC’s radar, but KSW’s lucrative offers have constantly remained higher to keep him on their roster.
At one point, Parnasse was considered the highest-paid fighter in KSW, claiming he was on $600,000 per fight.
