Trent Alexander-Arnold should be at the World Cup with England – Thomas Tuchel’s gamble has massively backfired.
That’s the view of ex-Newcastle and Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew, as he commented on the Three Lions’ right-back injury crisis.
England sealed their place in the knockout stage as Group L winners by beating Panama 2-0 in their final game on Saturday.
They will now pit their wits against African opponents DR Congo in the Round of 32 on Wednesday.
But boss Tuchel has a massive dilemma as to who starts at right-back, with first choice Reece James out with a hamstring injury and there are fears he could miss the remainder of the tournament.
Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah was named in the German’s line-up in place of the Chelsea captain against Panama, but hobbled off midway through the second half.
Tottenham full-back Djed Spence would be the likely candidate to make his second start in North America, while Tuchel has also been told Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice could be an option.
But for Pardew, he cannot get his head around some of Tuchel’s high-profile omissions from his 26-man squad.
Having only insisted Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer would have added much-needed creativity a few days ago, Pardew has now stressed that leaving out Alexander-Arnold has proven to be a big mistake.
The Real Madrid right-back was even overlooked following Tino Livramento’s injury, with Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah called up instead.
Tuchel’s made a right old mess
Speaking on the World Cup GameDay Live, Pardew claimed the Liverpool academy graduate should never have been allowed to stay at home.
He said: “If you went across the professional game and asked, I don’t know, 20 football managers, I think 19 would have taken Trent, I really do.
“I can’t see the logic of why not taking him.
“I think Panama was a bit more tricky, I could understand why he didn’t take him, I personally would have taken him.
“And I think that’s really [been] underlined [in] the last couple of games.
“But I just don’t think we look at a team that’s together.
“We look like a team that’s in the dark, searching for clues, searching for a relationship.
“Whereas when I’m looking at some of the top teams, I can see relationships and I can see a bond a little bit.”
And it’s the right-back area where Pardew believes England have their biggest issues.
He remarked: “Well, I think we’ve got problems, but obviously, we have an issue at right-back.
“But when you look at the relationships in a group, in a team, a good team, then you can start seeing some cracks in our team.
“I think our team are either on the verge of squeezing through on penalties [against DR Congo], which we could possibly do, or actually, getting really turned over, which I think is a possibility.
“And I’ll tell you why, I don’t think [Jordan] Pickford’s relationship with the two centre-backs is good, so, let’s look at that.
“[Ezri] Konsa and [Marc] Guehi last night, Pickford, the passing out, lots of finger pointing, not quite sure.
“[Nico] O’Reilly’s coming at left-back, he looks like he’s going to start on the next game to me, he looks okay, but he goes from outside to internal, into a central midfield position, so, we haven’t got a relationship with him and the left-sider.
“We don’t even know [who] the left-sider is – probably going to be [Marcus] Rashford, but it might be [Anthony] Gordon, so, there’s no relationship down the left.
“When I look down the right, it looks like now we’re going to have Spence playing right-back, who played five times for Spurs [at right-back in the 2025/26 Premier League season].
“Now, we’re looking for him to suddenly create a relationship with [Bukayo] Saka, how many times has he played with Saka?
“The only place where we look, to me, like a team, is in the central midfield area, where to me, [Elliot] Anderson, Rice and [Jude] Bellingham look good.
“I quite like that balance, I don’t think that’s going to be affected, I think that’ll start the knockout game.”
