Scottie Scheffler didn’t get off to the best start in his grand slam chase at the US Open.
The world No.1 finished two-over in his opening round at Shinnecock Hills, a notoriously difficult course that offered even tougher conditions than normal on Thursday.
Play was suspended due to heavy fog during the morning session, with strong winds causing havoc throughout the day.
Scheffler toiled with the Long Island course for much of his round, but wrapped up in style to save par from a bunker on the 18th hole.
He made four birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey to card two-over 72, and clearly wasn’t too happy with his overall effort.
Scottie Scheffler caught in behind-the-scenes argument after opening round
The American star, who has a chance of making history this weekend, hit the range after his five-hour long slog around Shinnecock.
As he hit some balls, Scheffler appeared animated alongside swing coach Randy Smith.
Footage showed the pair in what was described as a ‘big-hitting’ conversation.
The US Open broadcasters also suggested Smith was ‘constantly emphasising’ the ‘fundamentals’ to his player.
“This is not uncommon, they will go back and forth,” the commentators said.
“They’ve known each other a really long time, so they can have some big-hitting conversations.”
Smith, a PGA Hall of Fame member, has been Scheffler’s swing coach since the latter was seven years old.
Golf Digest senior writer Christopher Powers, who shared the clip online, suggested the four-time major champion was once again working on his grip.
“Trouble in paradise?” he wrote, captioning the post.
Scottie Scheffler reacts to ‘challenging’ day at US Open
While Scheffler is well off the pace after Thursday’s opening round, he suggested that course conditions at Shinnecock will lead to high scores throughout the weekend.
“Any time you get conditions like this, I think the scores are going to be high,” he told reporters.
“I think that it’s an interesting golf course.
“Part of the challenge so far is judging the conditions as well, judging how this course is going to play.
“I feel like this course can change pretty rapidly from day to day. I think that’s also part of the challenge of the tournament is adjusting to those conditions.”
Scheffler suggested he was engaged in a ‘good battle’ as he chases a career grand slam.
“It was a really challenging day,” he added.
“If you told me when I was staring at my par putt on 9 that I would post two-over today, I would definitely have taken it at the time.
“Overall it was a good battle. Get some rest, and we’ll see how the course changes over the next day.”
