Former 1500m world champion Jenny Simpson received CPR after collapsing during an event in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Simpson, who has represented the USA at three Olympics, was pacing a group at a Pop Up Miles event when the incident happened.
The 39-year-old met fans on Tuesday before she collapsed to the ground and had to undergo CPR on the track.
Her pulse had to be restarted, with medical staff said to have applied an automated external defibrillator.
She was then taken to hospital and is now receiving medical care.
A statement from event organiser Sir Walter Running read: “We are incredibly grateful to the individuals who responded immediately, as well as EMS and the medical professionals who handled the situation with such care, urgency, and professionalism.
“Jenny is receiving excellent medical care, and our thoughts are with her and her family during this time.
“We are also thankful to everyone who has reached out with concern and support.
“We ask that you continue to keep Jenny and her family in your prayers as we all hope for the very best.”
A photographer at the event, John Ruggero, also posted on Instagram about the ‘scary’ incident that occurred earlier this week.
He wrote: “Sir Walter Running pop up no 3 was a drama-filled night to say the least! There was amazing competition with Jenny pacing the 5:30 group, smiling the whole way, followed by some very scary moments. I’ve been praying all day for Jenny.
“Thank God for all the amazing first responders at the race and for the care she has received since.”
Simpson’s impressive career
Simpson is a successful distance runner in the States and on the global stage, becoming world champion in the 1500m.
She won gold at the 2011 World Championships before going on to win two silvers in the same event in 2013 and 2017.
In 2016, she also claimed bronze at the Rio Olympics, ending her wait for a medal at the Games after two previous appearances.
Her achievements in Brazil saw her become the first American woman to claim a medal in the 1500m event.
On top of that, Simpson is also a former record holder in the US for the 3000m steeplechase.
And at the start of her career in college, she became the only woman to break four minutes in the 1,500 meters during an NCAA season.
Simpson retired from competitive running in 2024 following the New York marathon in November of that year.
