Serena and Venus Williams will make their Wimbledon returns this month after receiving wildcards for the ladies’ doubles.
The sisters are six-time champions having done so twice as wildcards.
They join French Open finalist Maja Chwalinska in being named amongst the initial group of players awarded entry to the tournament.
Chwalinska will now no longer need to come through qualifying to appear in the ladies’ singles main draw.
The gentlemen’s and ladies’ singles will each see eight wildcards and 16 qualifiers join 104 automatic entrants.
A further 15 wildcard slots are set to be announced ahead of qualifying next week.
Williams sisters return
Serena Williams will continue her doubles comeback at SW19 alongside her sister Venus.
The pair won the ladies’ doubles as wildcards in both 2000 and 2002, with the victories amongst their six Wimbledon triumphs.
Overall, they are unbeaten in 14 Grand Slam doubles finals together.
Their most recent Wimbledon win in 2016 was the last time either Serena or Venus appeared in the ladies’ doubles at the event.
Meanwhile, Serena is fresh from appearing at Queen’s alongside Victoria Mboko.
It marked the 44-year-old’s first competitive action since retiring in 2022.
She will now be aiming to become the first wildcard champion at Wimbledon for 14 years.
Alongside the Williams sisters, only two other champions across the tournament’s events have been wildcards, Goran Ivanisevic in the 2001 gentlemen’s singles and 2012 gentlemen’s doubles winners Jonathan Marray and Frederik Nielsen.
Chwalinska earns spot
Chwalinska has also been rewarded for her stunning run to the final at Roland Garros with a spot in the main draw of the ladies’ singles.
The 24-year-old Pole climbed 93 places in the WTA rankings to world No.21 after her loss to Mirra Andreeva in the final.
However, she had not been guaranteed a place in the Wimbledon main draw due to the tournament’s rules.
The six-week cut-off for top 104 entrants comes prior to the French Open, at which point Chwalinska was ranked 114th in the world.
As a result, she would have needed to come through qualifying without a wildcard despite being ranked high enough to be seeded.
The gentlemen’s and ladies’ singles main draw consists of 128 players, with the top 104 players in the world at the cut-off joined by 16 qualifiers and eight wildcards.
British interest
Alongside Chwalinska, the remaining six ladies’ singles wildcards to be confirmed were all British.
They include former mixed doubles finalist Harriet Dart, who is currently 110th in the world.
Jacob Fearnley has been handed a gentlemen’s singles wildcard alongside three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka and Grigor Dimitrov.
However, Dan Evans must wait to discover if he has earned a berth, although he will partner Henry Searle in the gentlemen’s doubles.
