Darren Moore is now favourite to become the next Barnsley manager for the start of the 2026/27 campaign.
It was announced just hours before Barnsley faced Bradford on Saturday that Conor Hourihane would leave at the end of the season.
The ex-Premier League midfielder took over the League One side in March 2025 as the interim boss.
But his first season in charge has proven to be somewhat disappointing with the club firmly in mid-table not threatening for a higher finish.
The manager had let his frustrations known when the club sold their top scorer Davis Keillor-Dunn to Championship side Wrexham in the January transfer window.
Now it looks as though former Sheffield Wednesday and Port Vale boss, Darren Moore is the likeliest contenders to replace Hourihane.
Moore was in charge of Port Vale from February 2024 to December 2025, dismissed after his 100th game in charge of the club.
That followed his dismissal from Huddersfield after only nine months in charge and just three wins on the board.
There are a whole host of names linked with a move to become the next Barnsley manager, but all at big prices as things stand.
Darren Ferguson, the four-time Peterborough United manager and Lee Grant who left Huddersfield in January of this year are both similar prices in the betting market.

There are some managers who are huge prices who are available to start immediately including Stephen Hunt, former Reading FC manager, Paddy McCarthy who was the caretaker manager at Crystal Palace in 2023 and then again in 2024.
Both of whom will be looking for their next challenge and for the latter McCarthy’s first chance at a full-time position.
