Ilia Topuria is a former UFC featherweight champion and the current keeper of the lightweight strap. The 29-year-old, born in Halle, also ranks at number two in the promotion’s pound-for-pound list.

He brings a professional MMA record of 17 wins and no defeats. Included in that run are eight wins by submission, seven by KO, and only two on points.

Topuria’s overall form shows he doesn’t like to leave things in the hands of the scoring judges if he can help it. He won each of his last three bouts by knockout, thanks to a flurry of hard and sharp combinations.

The champ downed Alexander Volkanovski in round two, Max Holloway in round three, and Charles Oliveira inside a round last time out in Las Vegas.

Gaethje is the American hope

A professional since 2011, Justin Gaethje has made the lightweight division his own. The fighter known in UFC circles as The Highlight, 37-year-old Justin, is a two-time interim champion and is hoping to make it official by becoming the undisputed champ. Born in Arizona, but fighting out of Colorado, Gaethje has won 27 of 32 contests.

Taking a closer look at his record, Gaethje has 20 wins by knockout, six by decision, and only one by submission. He has five defeats, three by KO and two by submission.

Justin has never lost a fight on points, suggesting he’ll want to ensure this challenge goes into the later rounds. He won his last two starts, beating Rafael Fiziev and Paddy Pimblett on points.

Having set the scene for Sunday’s exciting UFC Freedom 250 show, and the main event involving Topuria and Gaethje, I’ll now reveal my researched betting tips.

Sticking with that thought, I’m going further and backing Sunday’s headliner to go the distance. Again, as you’re betting on how long the fight will last, the winner isn’t important. You want to see Topuria vs Gaethje going the distance and testing the scoring judges.

If we hear the final bell in Washington, your bet wins. Topuria last won on a points decision against Josh Emmett in Florida three years ago in Fight of the Night. He has won 2 of 17 on the scorecards.

Opponent Gaethje has won six times by decision, including in each of his previous two appearances. Three of Justin’s last five were settled on the scorecards.

My third and final UFC Freedom 250 prediction has the highest odds of my three selections. I’m suggesting a wager on the underdog, taking Gaethje in the fight-winner market at odds of 9/2 with bet365.

Justin can win on points, by submission or by knockout, and your bet wins. The odds are good enough to trust Gaethje as a single in the fight-winner betting.

The betting odds suggest our man is here simply to make up the numbers. Still, Justin is experienced at an elite level, brings an impressive winning streak, and holds an opportunity to become the UFC lightweight champion.

He earned that shot with a hard-fought, but deserved win, over Liverpool’s Paddy Pimblett last time to grab the interim belt.

My research suggests Gaethje has a stronger chance than the betting odds imply, making him a value pick. Finding overpriced selections is a good way to target a long-term profit, regardless of which sport you follow the most.
