Friday horse racing tips
Newmarket
- 2.20: Poseidon’s Warrior 4/5 (NAP – 2pts)
- 3.30: Bay City Roller 5/2 (1pt)
- 4.40: Stellar Sunrise 9/4 (1pt)
Ascot
- 2.35: Sweet William 9/4 (1pt)
- 3.10: Brussels 7/2 (1pt)
Punchestown
- 4.50: Dinoblue, 6.00: King Rasko Grey, 6.40: Lossiemouth (treble) 2.37/1 (1pt)
Poseidon’s Warrior
Billy Loughnane is deployed on this top Godolphin prospect who is also rated well above his rivals, but understandably all runners here are somewhat unexposed.
William Buick is otherwise engaged at Ascot before joining the Newmarket action on Saturday and Sunday with a whole host of rides.
This colt will wear a hood for the first time which will help him settle down having been quite keen at Newmarket in April in the Fielden Stakes.
But he placed a close second despite this and the extra furlong coupled with the hood and clearly liking Newmarket should all be factors in his favour.
Bay City Roller
A fascinating renewal of the Jockey Club Stakes with seven big runners.
But all I can see is the potential for more from Bay City Roller.
It’s another big ride for jockey Loughnane this time on the George Scott-trained four-year-old.
He’s susceptible to even more progress after a great ending to his three-year-old campaign and certainly appeals more than Lion’s Pride and Eydon, who both have question marks.
Whereas Eydon has troubling form at Newmarket in his last three appearances here which doesn’t encourage much confidence.
Stellar Sunrise
Oisin Murphy and Andrew Balding look to have a fantastic season together this year with both in great form.
Stellar Sunrise appeals a lot having won stylishly at Newbury in April, beating Colori Forever by over two lengths.
In addition to that the form works out well, hence his 8lb rise – take note of his win over Command The Stars at York last August before he aimed at the Group 3 Tattersalls Stakes and then had to pull out due to a cut leg.
Cerro Blanco is the favourite but after just one run it’s still tough to guarantee his ability having only made his debut here last month, when beating Wield – which is difficult to judge in what was quite a weak maiden contest.
Sweet William
Has been a true stayer in this sphere for some time and has almost been unfortunate at times to just come up against some tougher opponents.
Bumping into the likes of Trawlerman, three times, Scandinavia and Rebel’s Romance, yet putting them all throught their paces.
He went close in the Long Distance Cup here in October in the Qipco British Champions Day and arguably faces easier competition here.
Brussels
Consistent colt as a two-year-old constantly placing second but there’s a big chance he can improve on that.
His form is exceptional but just struggles to eke out that extra bit in the crucial moments when losing by small margins.
But now he’s back as a three-year-old for Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien, and he looks capable of beating the big favourite Wise Approach having gone close before.
Dinoblue, King Rasko Grey & Lossiemouth
A talented mare who’s only just keeps showing her ability more and more.
Now nine-years-old she won the Mares’ Chase at Cheltenham valiantly and has a solid record here too, winning this race last year by 35 lengths.
King Rasko Grey was a mightily impressive winner at Cheltenham and at 11/1 on that day was clearly overpriced, now a huge odds-on favourite for a reason making a great addition to the bet.
Lossiemouth was another big winner for Paul Townend and Willie Mullins at Cheltenham and she reappears here as another huge odds-on price. Let’s just hope they impress more so than some of their runners on Thursday.
