Myles Garrett has been traded to Los Angeles and Aaron Rodgers is back in Pittsburgh.
But the Cleveland Browns’ youth movement could turn a 5-12 record upside down in the coming years.
While second-year quarterback Shedeur Sanders battles with Deshaun Watson and Dillon Gabriel for the Browns’ starting job in 2026, reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Carson Schwesinger is proof of Cleveland’s roster recharge.
Throw in a new state-of-the-art $2.6 billion stadium, and recent draft picks Spencer Fano, KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston, and the Browns are trying to remake their NFL image in real time.
“Being on a team that has such a young roster is just endlessly exciting,” Surrey-born James Cook, the Browns‘ senior director of player development, exclusively told talkSPORT.
“I think our front office did an unbelievable job with last year’s draft. Not only the players that came through, but the people that the players are, as well, and how they go to work every day.
“I think we followed it up with a really strong draft this past year. And I’m really excited to see more of those rookies, and so far working with them, they’ve been fantastic. Coach (Todd) Monken has come in and been unbelievable. I love working with him, love his energy, the way he sees the game. I’m learning something from this coaching staff every single day.”
Aden Durde highlights the international reach of the NFL, journeying from north London and NFL Europe to a Super Bowl champion as the Seattle Seahawks’ defensive coordinator.
“I’ve known Aden a long time,” said Cook, who worked with Durde this week at an NFL Foundation Coach the Future event in Lambeth.
“Just knowing the person that he is and knowing his family and knowing what it all meant for them, it was really cool. We like to stay in touch through the year — we talk quite regularly.”
Shedeur Sanders enters sophomore season
Cleveland is coming off a dramatic 5-12 season filled with quarterback and coaching changes.
But Sanders made the Pro Bowl during his rookie campaign and will enter training camp as one of the hottest young names in the league.
He’s a 24-year-old QB with a strong arm, explosive playmaking ability and inner fire.
“I just see someone who’s continuously on the rise,” Cook said.
“His rookie year, he really was intentional about finding out what works for him, what doesn’t work for him, trying things out, using different areas of the building. I think he’s building on those things in year two. And I think he’s really helping himself out as much as he possibly can.
“Just getting settled and life as a pro and all those things. And obviously there’s a lot of noise that comes with the person that he is and then the family he’s from and all that kind of stuff. But I think he does an outstanding job of keeping the main thing the main thing and, yeah, I do really enjoy getting to know him and work with him.”
Cook began his NFL international career based in the league’s London office and has worked with the International Player Pathway program, NFL Academy and NFL Africa.
As the new-look Browns prepare for the beginning of training camp on July 23, Cook is in the middle of Cleveland’s youth-driven future.

“For someone in player development, working with a roster of young players is, yeah, you feel like you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.”
