Belgium have been forced into a last-minute reshuffle after skipper Youri Tielemans sustained an apparent hamstring injury during the warm-up.
Hans Vanaken starts in place of the midfielder for the Red Devils for their World Cup quarter-final against Spain.
Tielemans has played all but five minutes of Belgium’s World Cup campaign to date.
The Aston Villa ace has netted twice for the Red Devils at the tournament, both of which came in their thrilling come-from-behind victory over Senegal in the round of 32.
Ashton: Tielemans will be ‘a big miss’ for Belgium
Upon learning of Tielemans’ late withdrawal, ex-West Ham striker Dean Ashton was asked on talkSPORT whether his absence would affect Belgium.
“Well, it has to, I think he’s been such a big player for them,” Ashton said.
“He was magnificent for Aston Villa in the Premier League and he’s just continued that into this World Cup.
“Of course he got that last-gasp goal to help them through against Senegal [in the round of 32].
“But I just think his all around control, his threat from set plays in terms of his deliveries, I think he will be a big miss.
“But Vanaken I would say has done well when he’s come in, he really has.
“But to take Tielemans out of that midfield when you had [Nicolas] Ruskin alongside him and [Amadou] Onana who was injured as well [in last-16 win over USA].
“I think that could be a real blow too far.
“I just think now, you look at that Spain midfield, I think they’ll be really looking forward to it.”
Prior to the quarter-final clash against Spain, Vanaken had started two of Belgium’s five World Cup fixtures.
His best performance came in the Red Devils’ resounding 4-1 win over the United States in the round of 16, scoring one and assisting another.
Belgium’s growing casualty ward
Tielemans wasn’t the only pre-match absentee for Belgium ahead of the game against Spain.
In a statement, the Red Devils revealed they had been blocked by Sporting from making defender Zeno Debast available to play.
The Portuguese side ‘did not consider him medically fit’, an assessment that differed to Belgium’s.
Debast has not featured for Belgium at the World Cup having picked up a leg injury during the latter stages of Sporting’s season.
Amadou Onana is another who was ruled out of facing Spain having torn his ACL against the USMNT.
The towering midfielder sustained the injury in the first half and was later seen on crutches.
