France’s quest for World Cup glory resumes against Morocco on Thursday, as the quarter-finals get under way in the USA.

Having eased to victories over Senegal (albeit after a slow start), Iraq and Senegal in the group stage, France had to show a different side to their game last time out.

Paraguay were never going to make life easy for France. They defended with discipline and diligence, willingly ceding possession and sitting back in a compact 5-4-1 formation.

They also demonstrated their proficiency in the dark arts. Paraguay set out to win the tie by foul means or fouler. They showed disregard for the laws of the game and the limbs of their opponents, yet somehow did not pick up a single yellow card.

In the face of intense provocation, France kept their cool. A Kylian Mbappe penalty after a fine run from Desire Doue was the difference between the two teams.

Morocco also faced a challenge in the round of 32. In the face of Canada’s high pressing, the Atlas Lions struggled to find their rhythm in the first half.

They were not at their best after the interval either, but Morocco were ruthless on the counter-attack to take the game away from the World Cup co-hosts, ultimately winning 3-0.

That followed an impressive group stage in which Morocco drew 1-1 with Brazil, beat Scotland 1-0 and defeated Haiti 4-2, amassing seven points for the second World Cup in a row.

The last meeting between this pair came in the semi-finals of World Cup 2022, when France ended Morocco’s dream in a 2-0 victory. Will that also be the outcome on Thursday?

France and Morocco will go head-to-head for a place in the semi-finals of World Cup 2026.

Expect a tight game

France are obviously the favourites to win this match, but it is worth remembering that Morocco have not lost any of their last 33 games.

Not only that, but their most recent defeat came in the African Nations Championship, a tournament reserved for Africa-based players – and thus it was a very different Morocco XI to the one that will line up in Foxborough this week.

Morocco are therefore capable of giving France a game, but we expect the latter side’s superior quality to tip the balance. 

France ground one out against Paraguay, and although they will not face the same degree of rough treatment from Morocco, they may have to settle for another one-goal win.

More goals than last time?

Both these sides have changed since their clash in 2022. 

Didier Deschamps has removed some of the shackles from his France team, fielding a remarkably talented front four of Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise and either Desire Doue or Bradley Barcola.

Morocco have also become front-footed under Mohamed Ouahbi, who replaced Walid Regragui in their dugout earlier this year.

All of which is good news for the neutrals. We got two goals in the 2022 semi-final, but we expect at least three here.

Mbappe to shine again

Some players have great careers but fail to shine at the World Cup, but Kylian Mbappe tends to save his best form for this tournament.

His penalty against Paraguay means Mbappe has now scored 19 goals in 19 World Cup appearances, 11 of which have come in the knockout phase.

Mbappe has been terrific since this edition got under way. He needs only half a chance to score and often not even that much.

Mbappe is an obvious pick in the anytime scorer market, but he is still the right one given how well he has been playing over the last few weeks.
