England have reached a third consecutive World Cup quarter-final for the first time in 56 years thanks to a thrilling 3-2 win over co-hosts Mexico.
Harry Kane was once again ten-man England’s match-winning hero while Jude Bellingham scored twice in the delayed last-16 clash at the Azteca Stadium – which was pushed back by one hour due to bad weather.
Real Madrid midfielder Bellingham fired in a quickfire double in a frenetic spell which saw three goals scored in a six-minute period.
Saved by the Bell
Bellingham’s first of the match came in the 36th minute, as he headed home from close range by getting on the end of Bukayo Saka’s cross.
And he then put the 1966 winners two goals to the good two minutes later when he tucked away Kane’s squared pass across the face of goal.
But Mexico halved the deficit in the 42nd minute through Julian Quinones – the top scorer in the 2025/26 Saudi Pro League season with 33 goals.
Bringing up his fourth of the competition to become Mexico’s joint-leading scorer in World Cup history, the forward reacted quickest to fire into the roof of the net after England failed to clear away a free-kick.
England started the second half on the front foot, and almost restored their two-goal lead through Nico O’Reilly, but the Manchester City left-back’s strike smashed off the post.
However, England’s right-back curse at the World Cup continued as Jarell Quansah was sent off for a high tackle on Jesus Gallardo in the 54th minute to become the first Three Lions star to be sent off since Wayne Rooney against Portugal in 2006.
But ever the man for the big occasion, Kane then put England 3-1 up from the penalty spot in the 60th minute for his sixth goal of the tournament.
He now needs just one more knockout goal to hold the England record of most goals scored beyond the group stages, with the Bayern Munich marksman level with Gary Lineker on six.
The drama wasn’t done there though, as Kane was then penalised for a kick on Brian Gutierrez inside the box when he looked to clear away the ball, which was duly converted by Raul Jimenez in the 69th minute.
Mexico pushed for a late equaliser in their quest to reach a first World Cup quarter-final since 1986.
But Thomas Tuchel’s side stood firm – swatting away every dangerous phase of play to set up a last-eight clash against Norway on Saturday.
Legendary talkSPORT broadcaster Adrian Durham was effusive in his praise for England when giving his post-match analysis, as he said: “They’ve left Mexico in tears, there are players in green shirts crying their eyes out.
“That was proper England, graft, hard work, and you have filled a nation with pride. You are all heroes.
“There are some beautiful moments in your life that you’ll never forget, and this is one of those glorious moments. You beautiful, big, bold, brave lions.”
Here is how Durham rated and slated England’s stars…

Bell of a player
Another England game. Another Bellingham masterclass.
The 23-year-old has now banged in four goals in North America – bringing his total World Cup goals across two tournaments to five – half of his total England tally of ten.
His double has taken him into joint-third spot in England’s all-time top scorers in the competition – only behind Kane [14] and Lineker [ten].
And his two goals have seen him become the first player since Diego Maradona against Belgium in the 1986 semi-final to score twice in a World Cup game at the Azteca.
Bellingham also put in a stunning last-ditch tackle just before the break to prevent what would have been a certain equaliser.
Awarded a perfect 10/10 rating, Durham said of the Birmingham academy graduate: “Two goals, a goal saving challenge on half-time, non-stop commitment.”
Pick that out
England may have gone into the break ahead courtesy of Bellingham’s brace, but it was also thanks to Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Making his 17th World Cup outing since his tournament debut in 2018, Pickford has now equalled Peter Shilton’s England appearance record for a goalkeeper.
The former Sunderland shot-stopper was alert to keep out Jimenez twice in the first half.
He first got down brilliantly to deny the Wolves striker from heading into the bottom right corner, before tipping over his looping header on the stroke of half-time.
Lauding Pickford during his half-time analysis, Durham said: “Pickford has proved what a great goalkeeper he is… he’s got us going at the other end at as well.”
England hero Stuart Pearce meanwhile remarked: “He’s made two fantastic saves, but he’s composed.”
Despite failing to deny Jimenez for a third time from 12 yards out – a penalty in which he stood no chance – Durham awarded Pickford a 9/10.
Durham said of his display: “Great saves, great distribution, commanding in the air.”
Tuch of class
When the going got tough in the second half, Tuchel got every one of his substitutions spot on.
John Stones – brought on for Saka following Quansah’s dismissal – was awarded a 7/10.
Djed Spence meanwhile was given an 8/10, and Dan Burn – making his first World Cup outing – received a 9/10 rating.
Durham said of the Newcastle defender: “A World Cup debut he won’t forget. Monumental from the big man.”
And as for Tuchel himself, he was given a 9/10, as his side proved why many considered them to be one of the favourites to lift the World Cup heading into the tournament.
Speaking of the German, Durham simply stated: “Immense and passionate.”
