The NFL will return in three months, and predictions are already being made for a 2026 season that will be fraught with drama from the opening kickoff to Super Bowl Sunday.
A handful of teams have realistic dreams of lifting the Lombardi Trophy next February, while others might already be getting set to tank for college gunslinger Arch Manning.
The quarterback position, after all, is the most important on the NFL field.
Some teams have already found the face of their franchise, while others seemingly struggle under center week in, week out.
Ahead of the 2026 season, Pro Football Focus has ranked all 32 current starters, with analysis built around three seasons of performance, their PFF passing grade, Wins Above Replacement (WAR) and EPA per dropback forming the foundation of the list.
The likes of Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes and reigning MVP Matthew Stafford lead the rankings from first to fifth, but one quarterback will feel hard done by over his position.
Top NFL quarterback disrespected in pre-season rankings
Caleb Williams, who led the Chicago Bears to the top of the NFC North in 2025 with an 11-6 record before coming up clutch to secure their first playoff win since 2010, takes 13th place on the list.
The former No. 1 overall pick, who has recently been revealed as the Madden 27 cover star, also broke the franchise record for the most single-season passing yards (3,942) en-route to the postseason.
Despite that effort, he places behind Jayden Daniels, Trevor Lawrence, Brock Purdy, Drake Maye, Dak Prescott, Justin Herbert and Jordan Love, as well as the top five names, on PFF’s list.
“Williams made the sophomore leap many hoped for after the Bears hired Ben Johnson as head coach,” the analysis reads.
“‘Iceman’ led Chicago to its first Divisional Round appearance in 15 years and recorded 37 big-time throws, second among NFL quarterbacks behind league MVP Matthew Stafford.
“The cover athlete for Madden NFL 27 is still a bit of a gunslinger, as his negatively graded throw rate ranked 38th at the position.
“Even so, Williams is trending in the right direction and appears well on his way to living up to the immense expectations that came with being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.”
While PFF names Williams as a quarterback in the ascendancy, he will surely feel he deserved a spot above names like Love, who he beat in a playoff epic, as well as Daniels and Prescott, who both missed the postseason entirely with losing records.
But if his grade feels a little unfair, there can be little argument over the starter that has been ranked bottom of the list.
PFF reveals NFL’s worst quarterback room
That unfortunate spot goes to Deshaun Watson of the Cleveland Browns.
It probably comes as little surprise, given the AFC North franchise seems to be unstable at quarterback every single season.
Heading into 2026, the Browns are holding another competition between Watson and Shedeur Sanders for that starting role, but PFF believes the team will struggle regardless of who wins.
“Two torn Achilles tendons prevented Watson from taking a single snap in 2025,” the ranking read.
“It was the fifth straight season in which he logged fewer than 300 dropbacks. While he has a chance to win the starting job under new head coach Todd Monken, Watson has struggled during his time in Cleveland.
“From 2022 to 2024, he recorded a 60.7 PFF passing grade while averaging just 6.0 yards per attempt.”
On Sanders, PFF added: New head coach Todd Monken is holding an open quarterback competition between Sanders and Watson. Neither has played well recently, but Sanders hopes to make significant strides after a turbulent rookie season.
“Sanders’ 42.3 PFF passing grade ranked second-worst among 43 qualifying quarterbacks.
“Lauded for his accuracy in college, Sanders finished the 2025 season with a 69.8% adjusted completion percentage, which ranked sixth-worst among that same group.”
Heading into 2026, Browns fans have little to shout about once again. With the worst-ranked QB room in the NFL, perhaps its already time for the franchise to turn their attention to the next generation, and Texas signal-caller Manning.
