Deshaun Watson should probably already have been named the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback.
Owner Jimmy Haslam is keen to get as much as he can out of the $230 million quarterback before likely casting him into the wilderness in 2027.
Shedeur Sanders has his own career to worry about, though, and managed to take the battle into training camp.
Watson is still favorite to start the season under center, but having struggled to separate himself in a room featuring three mid-late-round picks, questions must be asked over whether another team will be prepared to take on the controversial passer.
“He’s done nothing for the Browns outside of playing maybe one good half of football,” Dustin Fox said on the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show on July 1. “If he can’t beat out two essentially rookies who are not high draft picks, his career is over.
“Who is going to sign this guy if he can’t beat Shedeur or [Dillon] Gabriel? Even if he does and he plays mediocre, still not getting a chance next year.”
Watson has not played a full season since joining the Browns.
Sexual harassment allegations cost him 11 games in 2022, a season-ending shoulder injury derailed 2023 and an ACL rupture cast a shadow over the previous two campaigns.
He is putting extra work at the Browns’ facility with private coaches in a bid to prove his fitness and potentially save his career.
Where will Deshaun Watson play in 2027?
Whatever happens this season, an extended stay in Cleveland is unlikely.
Watson will enter a 2027 free agency class that at the moment includes Baker Mayfield and Mac Jones.
There is also a red-hot class of college quarterbacks preparing to enter the league, which could limit the 30-year-old’s options.
Sanders made the Pro Bowl in 2025, albeit with a lot of help from withdrawals.
He has reportedly taken a big leap in his sophomore year, but there are a lot of question marks.
“I’m not saying Shedeur can’t get better; I’m just saying it doesn’t look good,” Browns reporter Anthony Lima said on 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland. “There are a lot of indicators. He’s got a lot to overcome.
“You just telling me he has similar stats to Hall of Fame QBs, I can do that with every QB that plays.”
ESPN’s Field Yates believes the Browns is the most ligitimate camp battle in the entire league.
“This is the truest quarterback competition in the NFL,” he said. “What I mean by that is whoever performs best in training camp should be the week one starter.

“There are other quarterback competitions where, if you have a young quarterback and he narrowly outperforms the veteran quarterback in training camp, I still would lean on the veteran early in the season to alleviate some of the pressure on a young player in Cleveland.
“Whether it’s Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson, maybe even Dillon Gabriel, whichever one performed best in training camp should be on the field for that opening week.”
The Browns played three quarterbacks in 2025 and if new head coach Todd Monken cannot find some magic, the revolving door may keep spinning.
