US Open contender loses control of club and sends it careering into crowd in scary scenes

Sahith Theegala accidentally sent his club flying into the crowds in a dramatic final round moment at the US Open.

After driving into the thick rough down the left side of the fourth hole, Theegala faced a tricky punch out of the fescue.

As he attempted to make contact with his buried ball, the long grass wrapped around his club and he completely lost control of it.

The iron slipped from his grasp and went careering over the grass and into the crowds flanking the hole.

Thankfully it appeared the club landed safely behind the spectators and no-one was injured, with laughter heard coming from the fans instead.

To compound the crazy scenes, Theegala then discovered a second ball hidden below where he took his swing.

He did manage to send his own ball 100 yards down the fairway but was then seen holding up a second which seemingly unburied itself as Theegala slashed through the turf.

It was similar to the strange ‘invisible ball incident’ that befell Rory McIlroy at The Open at Royal Portrush last year.

McIlroy described it as ‘the most weird, ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen’ and no doubt Theegala will have similar feelings about his antics at Shinnecock Hills.

The one-time PGA Tour winner went on to miss a six footer on the fourth green and had to settle for double bogey which sent him from one-under-par to one-over in quick fashion.
