Ecuador were fancied as a few people’s underdogs for the 2026 World Cup after impressing in qualification, finishing second in the South American group despite being hit with a three point deduction, conceding only five goals across their 18 matches.

However, Sebastian Beccacece’s side were beaten in the opening game of their 2026 World Cup campaign after suffering a 90th minute winner at the hands of the Ivory Coast.

The defeat leaves La Tri in need of a victory in their second game against a Curacao side who should be the weakest team in their group, to avoid being in a position where they need to beat Germany in their final Group E match to progress to the knockout stage.

The loss in Philadelphia last weekend was Ecuador’s first taste of defeat in any competition since September 2024, a run spanning 20 matches, and will leave them desperate to get back to winning ways as they bid a place in the knockout stage of a World Cup for first time since 2006 and the second time in their history.

Curacao exceeded expectations in their first ever World Cup match last weekend by also scoring their first ever goal, 20-year-old Zurich right back Livano Comenencia equalising against four time winners Germany to make history for the Dutch-owned Caribbean island.

Dick Advocaat’s side went on to be beaten 7-1 by a strong Germany side, but their next two matches against Ecuador on Saturday night and next week against Ivory Coast will provide them the best chance at picking up at least a point from their first ever World Cup group stage.

The Blue Wave have already made history by becoming the smallest nation by both population and area to qualify for the tournament, and will be looking to cap it off with a positive result to show for their efforts.

The North American nation have lost four of their five matches they’ve played this year since qualifying for their first ever World Cup, but will fancy their chances at causing an upset in Kansas City on Saturday night.
