On Fox Sports’ coverage of Les Bleus’ World Cup opener against Senegal, United States legend Donovan described the French side as ‘arrogant’ and ‘casual’ in the first half.
Henry, who made 123 appearances for the two-time world champions, unsurprisingly disagreed with that verdict.
But the issue of France’s perceived arrogance returned during the post-match analysis after Didier Deschamps’ side claimed a 3-1 victory.
Ex-USMNT star Alexi Lalas, who is never afraid to provide an outspoken perspective, acknowledged the back and forth between Donovan and Henry over France’s approach against Senegal.
“We can have that discussion, but the reality is, if they are arrogant, it’s because they can do things like that,” Lalas said.
“And the patience that they showed after a poor first half, to come back and provide a masterful second half with the talent they have and the big stars showing up, that’s pretty special.”
Ibra goes bang
Ibrahimovic then swatted away the claim in a rather ruthless manner.
“It’s not arrogance, it’s confidence,” Ibrahimovic said.
“Ignorant people say it’s arrogance. Intelligent people will say it’s confidence.”
Ibrahimovic’s sharp remark left Henry visibly stunned, with his reaction captured on the broadcast.

Following a goalless first half, Kylian Mbappe broke the deadlock in the 66th minute.
The Real Madrid superstar slotted the ball past Edouard Mendy having been expertly played in by Michael Olise.
Bradley Barcola, fresh off helping Paris Saint-Germain win back-to-back Champions League titles, doubled France’s advantage in the 82nd minute.
Barcola completed a blistering attack with a delightful dink over Mendy, who had raced out to try and shut things down.
Ibrahim Mbaye threatened to make things interesting when he pulled one back for Senegal in second-half stoppage time.
However, Mbappe killed off any hope of a late Senegal comeback as he scored immediately after Mbaye’s goal.
Mbappe’s double took him past Olivier Giroud to become France’s all-time record goalscorer with 58 strikes to his name.
The 27-year-old also now has 14 World Cup goals, leaving him two shy of record holders Miroslav Klose and Lionel Messi.
Messi joined Klose at the top of the World Cup goalscoring mountain as he netted all three goals in Argentina’s win over Algeria.
