The Cleveland Browns find themselves in a familiar position.
After selecting ‘rare’ Taylen Green in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, the Browns are back to where they were a year ago, staring down the barrel of a quarterback battle.
The general consensus is that it will either be Shedeur Sanders or Deshaun Watson starting under center come Week 1.
Sanders and Dillon Gabriel shared the snaps last season – after Joe Flacco started the season before getting traded to Cincinnati – with the Sanders stepping in for the final seven games of the season after Gabriel suffered a concussion.
Sanders threw for 1,400 yards with seven touchdowns, controversially making the Pro Bowl after player withdrawals.
Watson is the wild-card in the race. He missed the entirety of 2025 recovering from a ruptured achilles he suffered in 2024.

“I’m a dawg and I’m competitive,” Green said immediately after being drafted.
“I’m going to do whatever it takes to win, whatever it takes to get that first down, whatever it takes to score… if that’s laying my shoulder down to get a first down or if that’s hurdling somebody.
“I’m going to give all I have, all my might and all I got into it. So that’s why I want to let the franchise and let the fans know.”
There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding Green, but the potential upside could make this pick an absolute steal for Cleveland.
He is ridiculously athletic, running a 4.36 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, with a 43.5” vertical jump and an 11.2” broad jump.
Green is 6-foot-5, 227 pounds, and had some incredible athletic testing. He’s someone who could be a fun gadget weapon for the Browns’ offense
“A very mature young man. Really strong makeup and he has rare physical gifts,” Browns general manager Andrew Berry said after selecting him.
“He has size. He has elite speed. He has a big arm, and he’s gonna need some polish with his game, but he has the work ethic and acumen to do so.”
In 53 games at the between Arkansas and Boise State the 23-year-old threw for 9,662 passing yards, 59 passing touchdowns and 35 interceptions.
He also rushed for 2,405 yards and 35 more scores – sparking conversations as to whether he could be utilised elsewhere in the office, given his size and prowess on the ground.
The general manager was quick to shut down those talks however,
“He’s playing quarterback,” Berry said.
The selection is likely to put all three on notice, but nothing will be finalized until an official announcement is made by new head coach Todd Monken.
The drama is likely to rumble all the way through the summer, with Browns media already monitoring snaps taken as well as interceptions and TDs through last week’s first outings of the off season program.
With rookie minicamp set for early May, the next stop for the quarterback race will be OTAs and the end of May.
