Alex Pereira tipped the scales at a whopping 251lbs on Saturday morning ahead of his first fight at heavyweight.
The Brazilian two-weight champion has undergone a massive weight transformation for his interim heavyweight title bout against Ciryl Gane at the White House on Sunday.
‘Poatan’ has held UFC titles in both the middleweight (185lbs) and light heavyweight (205lbs), but is now stepping up to heavyweight for the first time in his MMA career.
He has never weighed more than 206lbs until now, and he actually came in 3lbs heavier than his French opponent Gane, who has regularly fought at heavyweight.
Should Pereira defeat his French opponent at UFC White House, he will become the first athlete to win championship belts in three different divisions.
Victory would also set up a blockbuster undisputed clash with current heavyweight king Tom Aspinall, who is on standby to defend his title against the winner.
Pereira vs Gane acts as the co-main event to Ilia Topuria’s undisputed lightweight clash with Justin Gaethje on the UFC’s historic White House card.
Poa-ton
After an illustrious kickboxing career spent largely under the Glory banner, Pereira made his UFC debut in November 2021 with a 3-1 professional MMA record.
A flying knee knockout on his debut at UFC 268 and a win against Bruno Silva set the 38-year-old up to earn a quick title shot if he got past current middleweight champion Sean Strickland in his third promotional appearance.
And ‘Poatan’ did exactly that, flattening Strickland with a beautiful left hook in the first round of their July 2022 encounter at UFC 276.
Four months later, Pereira was face-to-face with dominant champion at the time, Israel Adesanya, who had defended the 185lbs strap an incredible six times ahead of the fight.
The Brazilian already had two wins over Adesanya during his kickboxing days, and he made it 3-0 against ‘The Last Stylebender’ with a barrage of brutal blows in the fifth round of UFC 281’s main event.
Pereira dropped the belt to Adesanya under dramatic circumstances in their fourth combat sports meeting at UFC 287 before making the move up to light heavyweight.
A split decision win over Jan Blachowicz in his light heavyweight debut put Pereira straight into the title mix at 205lbs.
With the belt vacant after Jamahal Hill suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in his victory over Pereira’s current coach, Glover Teixeira, Pereira seized his opportunity to become a two-division champion against Jiri Prochazka.
Pereira pounded Prochazka with calf kicks in the opening exchanges of their UFC 295 headliner, overcoming a brief scare in the second round to drop his opponent with a left hook and finish him on the canvas.
Hill was fit again to challenge Pereira in the latter’s first defence of the 205lbs belt at UFC 300, but the American was brutally knocked out in the first round.
Pereira continued to tear through the light heavyweight division with a sensational head-kick KO of Prochazka in a rematch, before he stopped Khalil Rountree in a bloody war at UFC 307.
‘Poatan’ returned to action against Russian beast Magomed Ankalaev in March 2025, losing 29lbs in just two weeks to make the fight.
He dropped the title to Ankalaev via unanimous decision after five actionless rounds.
The Brazilian had toyed with the idea of moving up to heavyweight at the time, but made sure he returned to reclaim his belt before doing so.
In his last appearance eight months ago at UFC 320, Pereira walked right through Ankalaev and finished him with nasty elbows on the ground just 80 seconds into the first round.
He had been rumoured to face UFC legend Jon Jones on his debut at heavyweight, even verbally agreeing to a fight with ‘Bones’ online, but Dana White’s promotion pivoted when the American retired.
Pereira now has the chance to cement his status as one of the greatest to ever do it in the UFC on the grandest stages of them all.
