At this point it seems that Caitlin Clark is always making WNBA history.
In the Indiana Fever’s 114-106 overtime win over the Chicago Sky on Thursday, the WNBA superstar notched 32 points, seven rebounds and 10 assists.
In doing so, she recorded the third 30-point, 10-assist game of her career, further etching her name in league history as the only player to have achieved that feat more than once.
In fact, that stat line has only been seen in the WNBA on four other occasions, aside from Clark’s three, from Sabrina Ionescu, Skylar Diggins, Diana Taurasi and Jia Perkins.
The 24-year-old – who has been in somewhat of a shooting slump lately – has also achieved that feat in just 64 career games, with many years ahead of her to extend her current tally.
But that wasn’t the only piece of WNBA history that was witnessed on Thursday night as Clark and her Fever teammate Aliyah Boston became the first pair of teammates in WNBA history to each record a 30-point double-double in the same game.
Boston, a former No. 1 overall pick, posted 34 points, 12 rebounds and three assists in the victory.
It was only the seventh and eighth 30-point double-doubles in Fever franchise history.
“We’re good friends,” Clark said of Boston post-game. “That always helps.
“Like, yeah, you can be teammates and play basketball, but if you like, really care for each other and love each other off the court – and I think that goes for our whole team – when you have that bond and you truly get to know somebody and build a relationship with them, like that helps.
“When you’re on the court, you’re gonna go through moments of adversity. That’s just basketball, and that’s what helps to get you through, but also I feel like I always know where Aliyah is.
“I think we’ve got a little telepathy know, so, hopefully, we can get that going more, too.”
Clark loved Stephanie White’s technical foul
A lot of the discourse around the Fever of late has been surrounding the alleged tension between Clark and head coach Stephanie White, though they each played this down to their competitive natures.
Nonetheless, the former Coach of the Year was fired up – as usual – on the sideline against the Sky, and was whistled for a technical foul in the third quarter after going to bat for Boston who was called for her fourth foul.
White’s technical came just two minutes after Clark was called for one after being deemed to have over-protested on a no-call when she went for a layup.
“I was glad to see Steph get a technical,” Clark joked with reporters after the game. “She said the ref was soft. She thought she didn’t deserve it.
“The same ref t’ed us both up. Mine was definitely deserved, but I wanted it. After that I got to the free throw line more …
“If your coach gets a technical, that should fire the team up, you should want to go to war after that. And I feel like we did, and we made a bit of a run there.”
The Fever appear to have unlocked the key to their offense – run the ball through the tandem of Clark and Boston.
“Their synergy was just really good,” coach White said. “I think that their timing – and we talked a lot about being on time in our reads and in our passes – and I felt like tonight in those situations, especially with those two, they were often on time and on target.
“They’re so young, but they’re elite at what they do … When you have a point guard and you have a center that are special, you can build a team around that.”
The Fever have now improved to 7-5 on the season and sit 1.5 games back of Eastern Conference leaders New York Liberty (9-4).
