Denmark’s match against Ukraine has been abandoned after Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch.
The 34-year-old midfielder went to ground during the second half at Odense Stadium on Sunday.
In worrying scenes, players from both sides huddled around Eriksen whilst he received treatment from the medical staff.
The Danish FA later released a statement after announcing the match had been abandoned.
In a statement shared to X, they said: “Christian Eriksen is conscious and doing well under the circumstances.
“The match has been called off.”
‘Christian is doing well’
Team doctor Morten Boesen later confirmed that Eriksen had been able to walk off the pitch.
He has since been taken to hospital for further testing in order to determine the cause of his collapse.
In an update, Boesen said: “Christian is doing well and walked off the field himself. As I see it, the pacemaker is working as it should.
“He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.
“He will now be examined further at the hospital to find out what caused the incident.
“We are in constant contact with him and the doctors at the hospital.
“But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to say hello to all the players and say he was okay.”
Special measures
Following the incident, Danish Football Association director Peter Moller has also spoken out.
Moller has revealed that special measures have been put in place to help Eriksen’s teammates and others who have been impacted by the traumatic scenes on Sunday.
He said: “We have made sure that no one travels home alone. They either travel home with parents, family or with each other as a group.
“I also know that Brian [Riemer, Denmark manager]will be calling each player in the coming days and asking how they are doing and if they need anything.”
This was the second time Eriksen had collapsed on the pitch after doing so during a match between Denmark and Finland at Euro 2020.
Having suffered a cardiac arrest, he was later fitted with a defibrillator before returning to action.
The former Tottenham Hotspur man had been playing for Inter Milan at the time but departed the club due to Serie A banning players from playing with defibrillators fitted.
Having joined Brentford in January 2022, he later moved to Manchester United before signing for Wolfsburg last September.
After nine months away from the national team, he returned to the side in March 2022, scoring against the Netherlands.
Eriksen later featured at both the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024, where he scored in a draw with Slovenia.
The playmaker is Denmark’s all-time leading appearance maker with 151 caps and 46 goals to his name.
Prior to the clash with Ukraine, Eriksen played 74 minutes for Denmark against DR Congo on Wednesday.
Brian Riemer’s side are absent from this summer’s World Cup after failing to qualify through the play-offs in March.
Reliving trauma
Danish football expert Christian Wolny has revealed the impact of Eriksen’s collapse on the country and his teammates, who will be well looked after in the coming days.
He told talkSPORT: “It’s been a trauma relived for many people in Denmark, including some of his teammates who were also in the squad in 2021.
“Captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who was in the team back then, broke down in tears in the interview after the match.
“So clearly this has raised a lot of feelings in Denmark.”
Wolny added: “Clearly he wanted to continue playing and he probably could have for many years more at the highest level.
“But at the same time, he knew when it happened in 2021, he knew it could happen again, risks are low, but the pacemaker in case it happens, it will save you.
“That’s what we saw today, it’s sad in Denmark but also relief. He didn’t die this time, he got up and walked off the pitch.”
