It’s Day 2 of Epsom’s Derby Festival on Saturday and we have another excellent card to look forward to, with a good mix of Group and handicap action on offer.
Obviously, the main event is the Derby itself and it’s an intriguing and relatively open renewal this time around, while Calandagan and Jan Brueghel renew their rivalry and lock horns in the Coronation Cup, with it evenly poised at one victory apiece.
Our expert has taken a close look at the card and selected three strong fancies to follow and it could be Aidan O’Brien’s second-string runner who comes out on top in the big one.

Epsom Derby Tips
2.05 Epsom – Pacific Mission – 5/1
This Group 3 contest certainly isn’t the hottest of races for the grade and that leaves the door wide open for the lightly raced three-year-old PACIFIC MISSION. Juddmonte’s filly was progressive towards the back end of last season and that bodes well for 2026.
It didn’t take her very long to get off the mark and she managed to do so in good style at the second time of asking at Kempton in August. She then ran in the Group 2 May Hill Stakes and acquitted herself well, finishing second by just shy of a length.
A trip to America for the Breeders’ Cup was next on the agenda and she ran another cracker to finish second in the Juvenile Fillies Turf. You can put her performance at York last month down to a lack of fitness and she should step forward significantly from that.
2.40 Epsom – Calandagan – 10/11
Francis-Henri Graffard’s CALANDAGAN suffered defeat at the hands of Jan Brueghel in this race last year, but the five-year-old has taken several leaps forward since then and gained his revenge with an impressive success in the King George at Ascot after that.
He went on a short break after that, but returned to win the Champion Stakes at Ascot by a very comfortable margin of two-and-a-half lengths, with Prince of Wales’s Stakes winner Ombudsman back in second on that occasion.
Heading to Japan in November, he confirmed his status as one of the world’s best racehorses when winning the Japan Cup. He won at Meydan on his reappearance and it’ll be a bit of a surprise if he fails to get the job done here.
4.00 Epsom – Pierre Bonnard – 6/1
Things haven’t really gone to plan for PIERRE BONNARD this season, but the step up to 1m4f should make a huge difference. Clearly stamina was always going to be his forte, having produced top-level juvenile form of 1m2f, and he’s a future Leger type.
Badly in need of the run in the Ballysax Stakes, he got a bit outsprinted late on at Leopardstown last time out and should reverse the form with James J Braddock on this occasion. Aidan O’Brien expects him to take another significant step forward here.
His two-year-old form gives him every chance however and he was a strong stayer over 1m2f last term. The son of Camelot was a winner in Newmarket’s Zetland Stakes and was successful in a French Group 1 after that. The best is surely yet to come.
