Cole Palmer starred prominently in Nike’s blockbuster World Cup advert despite not being selected for the tournament.
The Chelsea star was one of a cluster of big names to be omitted by England boss Thomas Tuchel with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Phil Foden and Harry Maguire also facing low-key summers.
With the World Cup just six days away, Nike released their customary pre-tournament advert titled ‘Rip the Script’, and it’s fair to say that it didn’t disappoint.
Viewers could argue that it isn’t even an advert, rather a blockbuster mini-movie featuring football stars past and present.
The six-minute clip is a fusion of football skills, haunted houses and sport crossovers including NBA star LeBron James.
Unsurprisingly, Cristiano Ronaldo played a key role in the short film with the Portuguese forward outrunning fire while escaping a burning house unscathed with a football.
Other names featured in the chaotic video include Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, Vinicius Junior and Jamal Musiala.
Bittersweet moment for Palmer
Midway through the clip, Palmer is introduced alongside British rapper Central Cee and provides some silky ball skills that will not be on show at this summer’s showpiece tournament.
The 24-year-old netted for England in the defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final but struggled for form at club level during the 2025/26 campaign.
Palmer faced stiff competition in his position with Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon all preferred.
The Nike advert is based on the idea of instinctive and creative football which sees the crop of star names rebel against the plans of the production team.
That leaves the director frustrated which sees the ball fly into the air before it is taken through a glut of imaginative movie scenes.
Which other players starred in the advert?
The clip starts with Mbappe who launches a bicycle kick before Real Madrid teammates Vinicius Jr and Federico Valverde get in on the act.
There is also an appearance from Manchester City striker Haaland who adopts a more passive role alongside a stunt double played by Hollywood actor Channing Tatum.
The Norwegian later gets involved in the action and wraps up the advert with his explosive skills and finishing.
There’s an appearance from Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas, Bruno Fernandes, Raul Jimenez and Nico Williams.
Meanwhile, legendary figures Ronaldinho, Didier Drogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Eric Cantona all play their part.
Chelsea star Estevao also made the grade despite missing out on Brazil’s World Cup squad due to injury and USA captain Tyler Adams was also present.
From the world of entertainment, Kim Kardashian and son Saint graced the clip.
Rapper Travis Scott was also included with actor Jason Sudeikis thrown into the mix portraying fictional character Ted Lasso.
Nike will hope the video goes viral prior to next week’s big kick off in a similar way to their past pre-tournament exploits.
What other Nike adverts have been legendary?
Nike and Ronaldinho in 2005
The global sportswear brand knows all about the impact of viral videos following their 2005 advert featuring Ronaldinho which became the first video to ever reach one million views on YouTube.
The Brazilian performed a succession of kick-ups from the sideline to the edge of the box before proceeding to strike the ball against the crossbar only to see the ball fall directly into his path.
The 2005 Ballon d’Or winner subsequently struck the crossbar a further three times without the ball touching the ground.
It was later revealed that the video had been edited however scepticism over the video’s validity only served to rack up the further views.
Brazil’s airport samba skills – 1998
In 1998, Nike established themselves as a major player in the football market by launching their iconic advert of the Brazil team showing off their skills in an airport.
It begins with Ronaldo Nazario playing with a Nike ball, with Romario, Cafu and Roberto Carlos dazzling onlookers whilst being chased by the police.
At the end, Ronaldo hits the post and says: “Take it easy, we players make mistakes as all humans”.
The star-studded secret tournament – 2002
Nike took their creativity a step further ahead of the 2002 World Cup when they released their secret tournament film in a cage.
The marketing budget for the video was understood to be at $100 million with star names such as Thierry Henry, Francesco Totti, Paul Scholes and Luis Figo all involved.
The concept was a fictional 3-a-side futsal tournament involving eight teams of three of football’s top players in a first-goal-wins elimination.
The matches took place in a caged-like environment on a cargo ship with Cantona acting as referee.
Write the Future – 2010
Wayne Rooney was front and centre for Nike’s World Cup 2010 advert titled ‘Write the Future’.
The video shone a light on the impact a single pass or tackle can have on a player’s destiny and how a moment can change the course of a player’s career.
In the advert, a critical moment on the pitch causes a domino effect that spirals out of control for Rooney, where after a single misplaced pass, his life takes a dramatic turn.
Living in a caravan with his iconic beard has spawned countless memes since.
