Maxx Crosby is excited about the future of the Las Vegas Raiders with Fernando Mendoza at the helm.
The star defensive end thought he was headed for pastures new this NFL offseason when he was dealt to the Baltimore Ravens in what appeared to be a blockbuster trade… until it wasn’t.
Despite having travelled to Baltimore for a physical, the Ravens found something they didn’t like and the deal ultimately collapsed, which was highly unprecedented for a player of Crosby’s caliber.
Having ironed out all the issues with the Raiders brass upon his return, the plethora of additions in free agency including center Tyler Linderbaum, and selecting quarterback Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, the future is looking very bright in the Sin City.
With OTAs having got underway, Crosby – who is not an active participant as he continues to rehabilitate a knee injury – has joined the latest of a very long list of people within the organization who have given the rookie signal caller a glowing review.
“He’s an awesome kid. Everyone knows his ability, what they’ve seen,” Crosby said on Wednesday. “Obviously, especially this past season at Indiana, couldn’t have been a greater year for an individual player at a college level, winning the Heisman, winning the natty, not losing a game.
“Having a game-winning touchdown in the national championship. He checked every single box and some.”
Mendoza spearheaded the Indiana Hoosiers to an undefeated season which ended in winning the College Football Playoff National Championship for the very first time in program history.
En route to doing so, the 22-year-old completed 72 percent of his passes for 3,535 passing yards and 41 touchdowns to just six interceptions – a feat which saw him crowned the Heisman Trophy winner.
But Crosby knows that the jump from the collegiate level to the pros is a big one, and has offered some advice for his young teammate.
“You come into the NFL, and you’re ground zero,” Crosby explained. “And I think that’s what is the most important thing when you’re a young guy coming into the league, is realizing that.
“Listen, you don’t just come in and say, ‘Now you just start where you left off in college.’ That’s not the reality. You come here, and you have to earn your respect all over again and build up trust within your teammates and your coaches and the whole nine.”
Despite having only been around the rookie for a short time, Crosby has been left impressed by what he’s seen so far.
“He has a great work ethic,” Crosby added. “But ultimately, he’s a competitor. He’s learning and getting better every single day.
“So, I’m really excited for what he’s going to bring to this team, and you can already feel his energy on a daily basis. He’s been extremely consistent.”
Crosby entertaining the rookies
In an effort to get to know his new teammates, with the Raiders having had nine draft picks in 2026, Crosby revealed that he had them over to his house for some friendly competition.
With the NBA playoffs happening, Crosby hosted a watch party for the San Antonio Spurs’ Game 7 victory over the reigning champions Oklahoma City Thunder.
During that time, he went up against Mendoza in a friendly game of H.O.R.S.E, which he claimed he defeated the young rookie.
“I had a lot of the young guys over at the house. We watched game 7,” Crosby said.
“Fernando was unfortunately behind me in a game of H.O.R.S.E., and I destroyed him. I got him out of there quick.
“He’s gotta work on the jump shot.”
It seems as though all is forgiven in Las Vegas with Crosby, and he and the team can look ahead to what lies in front of them – a 2026 campaign to be proud of.
