Amanda Serrano is targeting Christie Martin’s all-time knockout record in her bout against Cheyenne Hanson, live on Sky Sports on Sunday morning.
The Puerto Rican enters the fight with a 48-4-1 record having claimed titles across seven different weight classes, with the only record left to claim being Martin’s record of 32 knockouts.
The magnitude of breaking Martin’s record is not lost on the unified featherweight champion, who is currently one behind on 31 knockouts.
“It definitely is [an ambition],” she said. “This fight would tie the record. She’s had it for over 21 years.
“I’m so close – I have to break it – I can feel it in my bones. But first we have to tie it Saturday night.”
Standing in her way is Cheyenne Hanson. The German will be no walkover for Serrano, boasting a 76 per cent knockout percentage of her own and has won nine straight fights over the past five years.
“She’s a come-forward fighter, but those are the fights I like. They’re the fights I’ve loved [in my career],” said Serrano.
“I’m at featherweight, where I feel my best, where I feel my strongest. I am undefeated at featherweight.
“I’m excited to put on a showcase in front of my El Paso fans, so I’m ready.”
Bidarian: Serrano wants to inspire next generation of female boxers
MVP chief executive Nikisa Bidarian, speaking to Sky Sports:
“I think her number one goal is to tie and break Christie Martin’s knockout record. If she gets a knockout this weekend, she ties it. Gets one more, she breaks it, most knockouts in history by a female fighter.
“It’s about continuing to give back to the sport. When you look at this coming weekend, Amanda approached us around going to El Paso and supporting Stephanie Hahn.
“And we said to Amanda, we love the idea, but to be transparent, we can’t afford to pay you what you’re used to getting paid here. Smaller market, different opportunity.
“Amanda didn’t hesitate and said, ‘I’ll take less. I want to do this. This is important for me to show these women what it means to be a team player, what it means to try to push women’s boxing forward.’
“I’m very thankful to her and her team for their willingness to not just look for themselves, but also look for the next generation of fighters and how they can support it.”
