Austen Lane has decided to leave the UFC by mutual consent.
The 38-year-old, who played for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Detroit Lions across 30 NFL games before his combat sports career, has reportedly informed the promotion of his decision to retire.
According to MMA Junkie, Lane was even offered another UFC fight in July, but the American decided against the idea and has called it quits.
Lane’s journey in the UFC
Lane initially tried to enter the UFC through Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS) in 2018, but was knocked out by fellow ex-NFL player Greg Hardy in less than one minute.
The heavyweight was successful in his second attempt, however, stopping Brazilian Richard Jacobi four years later to earn a UFC contract.
He then made his debut at UFC 293 in Sydney, Australia, but didn’t have much luck, as he was flattened by Justin Tafa in 82 seconds.
Lane returned seven months later for a Las Vegas Fight Night card in April 2024, but failed again in an attempt to get his first UFC win against Jhonata Diniz.
Six months later, the American finally tasted his first UFC victory by claiming a unanimous decision against Robelis Despaigne, who was one-half of the first-ever MMA fight on Netflix this month.
Lane tried to keep the momentum going when he faced Portuguese-born Brit Mario Pinto next, but Pinto made light work of Lane and stopped him early in the second round.
After a first-round submission defeat to Vitor Petrino in July 2025, Lane decided to move down to the light heavyweight division to resurrect his career.
He met undefeated Polish prospect Iwo Baraniewski in his first fight at 205lbs, which is now his last appearance in the UFC.
Lane fought Baraniewski on the main card of UFC London in March, and it was all over in 28 seconds.
Baraniewski caught Lane with a huge overhand right before following up with a sharp left and the American collapsed to the canvas, unable to avoid his opponent’s follow-up shots.
Lane’s departure coincides with that of Jesus Aguilar, with the Mexican flyweight also leaving the UFC.
Women’s bantamweight contender Ketlen Vieira, who was ranked No. 5 when she was cut, was released from the promotion last week alongside four others.
Colby Covington is the biggest name to have been let go in the series of roster changes.
Covington said on The Ariel Helwani Show this week that he left to focus on representing the Real American Freestyle (RAF) banner.
The American still views himself as a UFC fighter and doesn’t believe his MMA career is over.
