Morgan Gibbs-White has revealed what Thomas Tuchel said to him when telling him he hadn’t made England’s World Cup squad.
The Nottingham Forest star one of the notable omissions from the 26-man squad that was announced last week.
Gibbs-White hit 18 goals and seven assists across all competitions for Forest this season, while his 15 Premier League goals made him the highest-scoring midfielder in the English top flight for the 2025/26 campaign.
However, he has not been selected by head coach Tuchel to represent England at the World Cup.
And speaking to talkSPORT, he explained how he found out he wasn’t heading to the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Gibbs-White: It’s difficult, but I will bounce back
“I got the call on the Thursday like everyone else did, (to know) whether they were going or not,” he told Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent on Drive at the Maddison Invitational golf day.
“A good, honest conversation. He just said, ‘I’ve got people ahead of you right now. It’s nothing to do with you, you’ve done everything that you could possibly do. I’ve really enjoyed watching you the past six months, just unfortunately the way it is’.
“I respect him as a manager, I think he’s a top, top manager and I really hope the boys go on to do something incredible this summer because they truly deserve it. They truly deserve it.
“He’s a top guy and I appreciated the call, he didn’t have to call me to tell me I wasn’t in the squad, so I appreciate that.
“But for me personally, it’s obviously difficult, it’s so difficult because you try and put yourself in the best possible situation to go, and I believe I did.
“But, I think the game’s all about opinions. I mean, you guys on the show, it’s all opinions.
“Some are wrong, some are good, some are bad, and I’ve been on a lot of people’s wrong opinions in my career so far, and I’ve always got over those hurdles and bounced back from them.
“So, this is just another hurdle, another thing to bounce back from.”
Former England international Bent then asked: “How difficult was it to take? Because again, me and Andy talk about it all the time, and I’ve been there.
“You almost convince yourself that you’ve played well enough, so you’re going to be going. But when that call comes, that you’re not going, the initial thought process that went through your head, were you almost in shock or did part of you think it was coming?”
“No,” Gibbs-White replied. “Going into it, I kind of expected the worst, I always expect the worst in those sort of situations just so that, when it does come, I’m not that disheartened.
“Obviously, when you find out the news, you’re disheartened no matter what. But yeah, as a football player, you try so hard for these moments because when you retire, you look back and feel you really miss out on these moments.
“So, I tried to put myself in the best possible contention I could and I believe I did that, and I know in myself I did that.
“So, I’m comfortable with knowing in myself that I did everything that I could do, and then obviously I can’t dictate people’s opinions.
“But it was a great chat with him, an honest conversation, and I respect him for calling me and telling me that I wasn’t (in the squad), because he didn’t have to do that.”
When do England play at the World Cup?
