Frank Warren has suggested Tyson Fury will fight a recognisable name next but it won’t be Andy Ruiz Jr.
Fury is seeking a warm-up fight before his blockbuster signed bout with Anthony Joshua, which will take place in the final quarter of this year.
Joshua will first face an unbeaten but limited fighter in Kristian Prenga in July, whom he is expected to beat comfortably.
The likes of Andy Ruiz Jr and Jarrell Miller were under consideration to be Fury’s warm-up opponent according to his manager Spencer Brown.
And it is a different challenge for the ‘Gypsy King’, given he has already beaten Arslanbek Makhmudov in April and doesn’t want to take a step back.
But in a fresh update, promoter Warren has ruled out Ruiz but insisted it will be a decent calibre of opposition.
He told iFL TV: “It won’t be Ruiz, it won’t be him.
“He wants a good type of opponent, like he had last time.
“A recognisable name in the opposite corner to tune up before facing AJ.
“It looks like Tyson may have a fight as we don’t want him to be waiting around.
“We are hoping to announce it this week.”
It is clear Fury will take more of a risk than Joshua, given the stage of his preparation.
And the Morecambe native will need a convincing display to ensure he doesn’t slip up and derail his long awaited duel with Joshua.
Fury – I could get KO’d and blow AJ fight
Of course for Fury he understands that he needs to stay active.
But with the opportunity to fight again comes significant risk.
And he admits he could get knocked out, but intends to take the potential event very seriously.
“It’s just about me versus me always,” he said.
“So, whoever the opponent is, if it’s Joe Blogs or if it’s Mike Tyson, it’s all important to me.

“It’s just the run out for me. Like, just to get sharper for the big one.
“Listen, I might get knocked out my next fight in August. So then it’s all over it.
“So I got to take one fight at a time, and they’re all deadly serious fights.”
