The Dutchman’s trainer Fury sought the opportunity to confront Lyson during their flight home from the desert setting.
And he has claimed that Lyson told him he didn’t even hear the bell when calling a halt to proceedings.
Fury told iFL TV: “The referee Mark was on the flight with me on the way back.
“So I went over to him as that’s the way to go over and settle a dispute.
“I wanted to know why he stopped the fight after the bell. The fight could have gone to points, or Usyk could have stopped him properly.
“But the referee has made a mistake because that is what has caused the controversy.
“He said to me, ‘Peter I didn’t hear the bell’. I said, ‘well that I believe as I didn’t hear the bell either’.
“I thought it was two seconds before, he didn’t hear the bell. I will give him credit, we shook hands and it is what it is.
“I think he realised he made a mistake, he said he was there to protect the fighter.”
Verhoeven aggrieved but set for appeal
An official appeal has now been lodged and it remains to be seen what action can be taken.
Verhoeven was not impressed with the decision and believes that even if the bell was missed the conclusion to step in was premature.
Usyk has since responded, insisting it is not his job to control the variables of how the fight ended.
He added: “I do not think about this. A lot of people say, ‘Hey, it’s early’. Listen, it’s not my job. My job is boxing.”
