Zheng reached the quarter-finals of this Grand Slam event last year but has fallen at the first hurdle this time around.

She returned to action following a five-month injury lay-off in February, picking up just seven wins in total in 2026.

And her latest setback, which also included some concerning medical treatment in the first set, left her very emotional.

As she was taking questions from the media in her press conference following the loss to Chwalinska, Zheng broke down in tears.

“The nerves and the pressure today didn’t allow me to play the tennis that I want,” the 2024 Paris Olympics gold medallist said.

“I need to accept that I did not play well and lost the match.

“[Losing in the] Roland Garros first round is really, really tough for me.

“It will take some time to handle it.”
