Oleksandr Usyk returns to the ring tonight for a spectacle at the Pyramids of Giza.
Boxing’s biggest stars, including Anthony Joshua, Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez, have flown to Egypt for Usyk’s WBC heavyweight title defence against Dutch kickboxing icon Rico Verhoeven.
While Usyk is technically defending all three of his WBA, WBC and IBF belts, Verhoeven is only eligible to win one of them in what is just his second professional bout.
The 37-year-old is aptly nicknamed ‘The King of Kickboxing,’ having retired from the sport as Glory heavyweight champion with a 49-8 record, unbeaten in his last 22 appearances.
His opponent, Usyk, is already one of the all-time greats in the sweet science.
Usyk, 24-0, stopped Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium last July, following two wins over Tyson Fury in Saudi Arabia.
He has defeated all three of Dubois, Fury and Joshua twice in the last five years, and tonight marks the first time Usyk has faced a non-British opponent in almost seven years.
