Pep Guardiola has revealed that his biggest regret as Manchester City boss was that he didn’t give Joe Hart the chance to consolidate a starting spot when he took over in 2016.
Guardiola succeeded Manuel Pellegrini as City boss 10 years ago and one of his first signings was Chilean shotstopper Claudio Bravo from former side Barcelona, while the Manchester giants then brought in Ederson in 2017.
Hart didn’t get a look-in under Guardiola and the Englishman ultimately departed for Torino on a season-long loan shortly after Pep took charge.
The English goalkeeper then joined West Ham on loan in 2017 and Burnley permanently in 2018.
Guardiola, who will leave the Etihad Stadium after Sunday’s welcome of Aston Villa, has confessed that he ‘should have’ given Hart a chance to battle Bravo for the starting spot between the sticks.
“I want to confess something. I have regrets,” a visibly emotional Guardiola began in an interview with Sky Sports.
“When you take a lot of decisions – a lot, a lot of decisions – you make mistakes.
“But there is one regret that I have hidden deep inside for many years.
“I didn’t give Joe Hart the chance to be with me, to prove how good a goalkeeper he was.
“And I should have done. With all respect to Claudio (Bravo), and then Ederson who came in – he was important – but in that moment I (should have) thought, ‘Okay Joe, let’s try to do it together. If it doesn’t work, then we change it.’
“But it happened. In life, sometimes you have to take decisions, and sometimes I’m not fair enough.”
Hart has previously opened up on his brief interaction with Guardiola following the latter’s 2016 arrival in Manchester.
“I’m cool with Pep, I think he’s a top manager,” Hart told Sky Sports back in 2018.
“He came in and was dead honest with me. I looked him in the eye and shook his hand, I thanked him for his honesty.
“I didn’t thank him for his opinion, but his honesty was second to none. We tried to make the best of a bad situation for both of us.
“It is what it is. I moved on, worked hard, trained with City, I was welcomed back the last couple of pre-seasons. It could have easily been awkward, but it wasn’t.”
Following stints with West Ham and Burnley, Hart briefly played for Tottenham and then spent three seasons with Celtic before calling time on his career in 2024.
