Many had anticipated that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander would win his second-consecutive MVP award.
However, what many people didnât expect was ESPNâs NBA Insider Shams Charania to break the news 12 hours before the league was going to officially announce it on NBA on Prime.
The early leak drew intense criticism against Shams for posting the result and preempting any official league announcement, including from the NBA on Prime broadcasting team, who told him to âgo to brunch.â
Gilgeous-Alexander, ranked by talkSPORT as the best basketball player in the world, averaged 31.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 6.6 assists across the regular season, while shooting a career-high 55.3 percent from the field.
He inspired the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 64-18 record, the NBA’s best for a second-straight year, and OKC currently face the San Antonio Spurs in a blockbuster Western Conference Finals series.
Victor Wembanyama, who finished third in MVP voting, put San Antonio on his shoulders in Game 1 on Monday, with a record-breaking performance that gave San Antonio a 1-0 series lead.Â
Charania appeared on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday and defended his decision to report the SGA news, saying that it’s his job to do so.
âI mean, listen, part of me is like, what are we talking about here?â Charania said.
âSo this is a massive story. And when I get it, I vet it. And then my job is to report the news. And so thatâs all I focus on.
âThatâs what I go to sleep thinking about, thatâs what I wake up thinking about. I feel a responsibility.
âLike you said Pat, this isnât the first time necessarily, but itâs not going to be the last time where Iâm just going to try and do my job to the best of my ability.âÂ
Charania gave further detail as to why he felt he needed to reveal the news early, crediting Gilgeous-Alexander for his incredible season.
âThe other part of me is like, for me, when I get news, when I get information, if Iâve 100% vetted it like I did late Saturday night, early Sunday morning, when I have news 100% no matter how big, no matter how small.
âIn this case, obviously very, very big accomplishment, very big news around the NBA, for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander being the 14th player in NBA history to be the back-to-back league MVP.Â
âHeâs only, since Stephen Curry, the only guard to go back-to-back. Heâs the only player to go back-to-back, period, since Nikola Jokic.
âThereâs a list of accomplishments here. I mean, heâs in rarefied air.â
The debate follows a similar recent media controversy during the NFL Draft regarding whether reporters should hold verified information to protect a broadcasting partner’s planned timeline.
The back-and-fourth continued on Monday, and Charania was welcomed onto ESPNâs Basketball coverage noting that he had just joined fresh off brunch — a reference to the joke at his expensive on NBA on Prime.
Draymond Green says leak was not good look for NBA
Shamsâ critics claim that by leaking the MVP winner he made it more about himself than the MVP award and the NBA.
Golden State Warriors legend Draymond Green said that this was not a good look for the league, and made it look like the organization had many holes.
âI think the NBA has to do something about that. Like ultimately, youâre the NBA. You control the media,â Green said on his show.
âLike yeah, Shams is a reporter with ESON, who is a partner of the NBA. To tweet at 6:00 in the morning who the NBA MVP is, itâs actually embarrassing.
âIt makes our league look like we have no organization. It makes our league look like itâs childâs play.
âLike we canât hold the winner of the most prestigious individual award in the NBA? We canât hold those results until itâs actually time to be an
