Wayne Rooney has revealed the hilarious reason behind his wrist injury, as he appeared on live television with his hand in a cast.
The England legend was on punditry duties for the BBC’s coverage of the FA Cup final on Saturday and viewers will have noticed that he was sporting a rather obvious hand injury.
Why is Wayne Rooney’s hand in a cast?
Keen to clear up any speculation over the injury, Rooney addressed the cast on his hand at the start of the BBC’s coverage ahead of Manchester City and Chelsea’s Wembley showdown.
He revealed that he picked up the problem while recording a segment of the BBC’s The Wayne Rooney Show podcast.
Rooney had spent the week interviewing Everton and England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Keen to capture some entertaining content, he then shared that they had gone through some goalkeeping drills on Everton’s training ground.
But it all went horribly wrong when Rooney attempted to save Pickford’s penalty, as he dived and injured his left hand.
A video of the save was then shown on the BBC as Rooney explained: “I was in goal with Everton.
“Look at that for a save, I saved that [penalty] but hurt my hand and seeing a surgeon on Monday to see if I need surgery.
“By the way, just for the newspapers out there, I haven’t got my wedding ring on because my fingers have swollen up – I know they will make a big thing.”
Rooney’s eventful podcast episode was broadcast on the BBC ahead of the FA Cup final.
As well as his ill-fated shootout, the former striker’s time with Pickford also saw him involved in a number of training exercises.
