Johnny Nelson has lashed back at Prince Naseem Hamed as their verbal war has continued on talkSPORT.
Hamed made a meteoric rise in boxing under the guidance of late former trainer Brendan Ingle in Sheffield.
But the pair went through a public row after their split in 1998 and never rekindled.
A film was released, Giant featuring Pierce Brosnan, which documented Hamed’s rise and feud with Ingle, but the boxing superstar wasn’t happy with it.
‘Naz’ suggested’ that his former mentor Ingle was ‘money obsessed’, which infuriated former cruiserweight champion Nelson, who trained at the same gym.
He believed it didn’t tell the story correctly to which former gymmate Nelson accused Hamed of spinning ‘disgusting lies’.
In response to that very claim, Hamed said on the latest episode of talkBOXING: “Johnny wants publicity off my name. Living vicariously through someone else. Clout chasing.
“And it’s got nothing to do what he feels about Brendan. But you know what?
“I always realized afterwards when I analyzed Johnny, there was only ever one snake in that gym.
“It’s unbelievable how much of an over-achiever in boxing what Johnny did because, firstly, Johnny needs to realize the truth about him and his career.
“And that is, without me coming from the same gym as him and opening the doors, I begged Frank Warren.
“Johnny Nelson was supposed to be called—he was supposed to be the entertainer. That was his ring—that was his fight name. Who did he ever entertain?”
Nelson issues first response to talkSPORT
It was a scathing attack on Nelson’s career and character, which he didn’t take kindly too.
And the Briton who was close friends with the gifted champion during their coinciding rise, had his own say.
He said on talkSPORT’s White & Jordan: “This kid is delusional.
“It’s like a dog that keeps biting you. If you don’t teach a dog to not bite you, it will do it to everybody.
“He needed to be checked when he came out with this bull****, people let him run his mouth off and talk garbage.”
When asked if any reconciliation could be on the cards for the previous long-term friends, Nelson added: “He sent me two messages.
“This idiot sent me two messages since the film. I blanked them, I;m not engaging with him.
“I don’t know him anymore, what he’s doing is wrong and if you can’t accept that you’re not my type of person.
“This kid hasn’t changed, he’s gotten worse. Is that the kind of guy I want as a friend, no.
“I admire his achievements, but I’ve lost respect for him, he’s a walking contradiction.”
Hamed and Nelson clearly have their differences from their past in the Ingle gym, and they are clearly unlikely to be settled.
